After GT humbling, SRH captain Pat Cummins given hefty fine for slow over-rate

Pat Cummins was fined Rs. 12 lakh after Sunrisers Hyderabad maintained a slow over-rate against the Gujarat Titans. The sanction came on a night when SRH sank to their lowest-ever IPL total and heaviest defeat by runs.

Pat Cummins was penalised for a slow over rate during Sunrisers Hyderabad’s IPL 2026 clash against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Since it was SRH’s first over-rate offence of the season, the captain was handed a fine of INR 12 lakh.

Slow over-rate violations have become a familiar issue in the IPL, with multiple skippers facing sanctions over the past few seasons. This season has already seen the likes of Shreyas Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane get sanctioned for the same offence. For Cummins, the penalty only added to a disappointing evening as SRH slumped to a heavy defeat against GT.

"Pat Cummins, Captain, Sunrisers Hyderabad, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during Match No. 56 of TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad."

"As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Cummins was fined INR 12 lakhs," read the statement from IPL.

SRH'S ROUGH DAY IN AHMEDABAD

Sunrisers Hyderabad endured a nightmare outing with the bat, crashing to an 82-run loss after being bundled out for just 86 in 14.5 overs while chasing 168 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Tuesday. The visitors never looked settled in the chase as Gujarat’s bowlers completely dismantled the batting line-up.

The defeat became SRH’s heaviest in IPL history in terms of runs, eclipsing their previous worst — an 80-run loss against Kolkata Knight Riders last season when they were dismissed for 120 while pursuing 201. This collapse proved even more dramatic, with Hyderabad recording their lowest-ever total in IPL history.

It was also the first occasion since 2024 that SRH failed to chase down a target below 200 in the IPL. Their score of 86 was 10 runs lower than their previous lowest total of 96, registered against Mumbai Indians in Hyderabad back in 2019, capping off a humiliating night for the batting unit.

Following the crushing defeat, Cummins urged his side to move on quickly and recover before their next fixture.

"This happens in T20 cricket. We (now) go to venues we know well, so we take confidence from that. We won five or six (matches) and that gives a bit of breathing room, so going back to what got us those wins and putting this behind quickly," said Cummins.

SRH face CSK at Chepauk on Monday, May 18 next.
