Sree Kanteerava Stadium looked straight out of a winter postcard on an otherwise hot April day. A sudden hailstorm in Bengaluru turned the football ground white, with visuals quickly going viral on social media and leaving fans joking that the city had briefly turned into a European winter venue.

It was a bizarre sight for a city known more for pleasant weather than extreme conditions. Clips showed the entire surface covered in layers of hail, resembling snowfall, something usually associated with countries like Germany rather than southern India.

The timing made it even more surprising. Bengaluru has been dealing with rising temperatures over the past few weeks, making the sudden shift to a hailstorm even more dramatic.

WHY DID KANTEERVA TURN WHITE?

The transformation was caused by an intense spell of rain accompanied by heavy hail across parts of the city.

Hailstones accumulated rapidly on the surface, giving the stadium a snow-like appearance. The viral videos captured how quickly the ground changed, with sections of the pitch completely covered in white.

A similar impact was seen at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where heavy rain lashed the area, showing how widespread the weather system was across the city.

HOW BAD IS BENGALURU WEATHER CURRENTLY?

The hailstorm comes amid a stretch of unusually warm weather in Bengaluru.

Temperatures in the city have recently climbed above seasonal averages, touching around 36°C, which is higher than what is typically expected for April. The contrast between heat and sudden storms highlights the unstable weather pattern.

Across Karnataka, conditions have been even more extreme. Several regions in the northern and central parts of the state have recorded temperatures in the mid-40s, with some areas crossing 46°C earlier this month.

For Bengaluru, the sudden hailstorm was a rare break from the heat. But it also showed how unpredictable the weather has become, with the city swinging from summer-like conditions to near “snow-like” visuals within hours.
