Often referred as the heart of India’s Sikh community, Punjab is an Indian state which is located in Northern India. Covering an area of 50,362 sq km, it is the 20th largest Indian state. Punjab comprises 23 districts and is also the 16th largest state by population. Talking about its history, Punjabi civilisation is a result of migration (at the time of the Partition) leading to an amalgamation of different tribes of people with different ideas and cultures. Following the religious violence and partition of India in 1947, undivided Punjab was spilt into West Punjab and East Punjab on a religious basis. It was on November 1, 1966, when a new integrated and enlarged Indian state, Punjab came into existence under the Punjab Reorganisation Act (1996). The state is bordered by a province of Pakistan to the west, Jammu and Kashmir to the north, Haryana and Rajasthan to the south and Himachal Pradesh to the northeast. Punjabi (widely spoken), written in the Gurumukhi script is the official language of the state. Union territory, Chandigarh is the state’s capital and three of five tributary rivers of the Indus River i.e., Sutlej, Beas and Ravi are the major rivers that flow through Punjab.
Punjab is home to many tourist attractions including Jallianwala Bagh, Wagah Border, the Golden Temple and Harmandir Sahib. Interestingly, Punjab has a loud, vibrant and rich culture amongst all the other states of India. Men wearing traditional Punjabi Kurta and Tehmat along with Pagri while women wearing Patiala suit salwar perform the worldwide famous, Bhangra and Giddha (folk dances) which depicts the rich folklore of Punjab. Known as the "Granary of India" or "India's bread-basket", the state also offers a diverse range in its cuisine. Dishes like ‘Makki di roti’, ‘Sarson da Saag’, ‘Amritsari Kulchha’, ‘Shami Kebab’, ‘Tandoori chicken’ are some of the specialties of the state.
