As UK politics spiral again, Downing Street's Larry the cat has only one concern

A viral post from Larry, the Downing Street cat, surfaced as pressure grew on Keir Starmer. The reaction turned the long-serving tabby into a comic symbol of stability during another Westminster upheaval.

As British politics once again descended into its favourite national pastime, leadership drama, the internet found comfort in the only resident of 10 Downing Street who seems truly untouchable: Larry.

The famous Downing Street cat has gone viral after a hilariously timed post appeared online amid mounting chatter around Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s political troubles. And naturally, people trusted Larry’s judgment more than most political analysts.

The viral tweet read: “Whether Starmer stays or goes we can all agree that me being fed is the most important thing.”

That one sentence instantly sent social media into meltdown.

Users flooded X with jokes calling Larry the “most stable political figure in Britain” and the only constant in a country where prime ministers appear to change faster than weather forecasts. Some even joked that Larry has now outlasted enough governments to start conducting exit interviews himself.

The humour landed perfectly because of Larry’s strange but legendary status in British politics.

Officially known as the “Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office,” the tabby cat has been living at Number 10 since 2011. In that time, he has casually witnessed a political carousel that includes David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak and now Keir Starmer walking through the famous black door.

At this point, Larry is less a cat and more a constitutional institution.

Over the years, the feline has developed a cult following online thanks to parody social media posts that treat him like the exhausted long-term employee watching management constantly change around him. And during every political crisis, the internet inevitably returns to the same conclusion: the humans may come and go, but Larry remains seated outside Downing Street like a furry auditor silently judging everyone.
