Dergaon Assembly Constituency

Dergaon Assembly Constituency is a general unreserved seat in Golaghat district, central Assam (earlier part of Jorhat district before reorganisation). It is one of the 10 segments of the Kaziranga Lok Sabha constituency, which earlier formed part of the Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency. Situated in the fertile Brahmaputra Valley plains on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River, it features flat alluvial lands with gentle undulating terrain extending towards the southern hills. The area is renowned for its agricultural prosperity, tea gardens, and proximity to the Brahmaputra River's riverine setting, featuring lush paddy fields and a rural charm.

Dergaon, now a general (unreserved) constituency, had its reservation removed after delimitation and boundary adjustments in 2023. It was a Scheduled Caste-reserved constituency since it was established in 1957. Dergaon has participated in 15 Assembly elections so far, including the 1965 by-election. Congress won seven times, AGP had five victories (including the 1985 election, where the winner is listed as an Independent since members of the All Assam Students Union filed nominations before AGP was formally launched), Samyukta Socialist Party had two wins, and Janata Party had one win in 1978.

Aroti Hazarika Kachari of the Congress party won the Dergaon seat in 2011, defeating the sitting MLA Sushila Hazarika of the AGP by 21,260 votes. The AGP has since held the seat twice with Bhabendra Nath Bharali as its nominee. Bharali defeated Aroti Hazarika Kachari, the sitting MLA of Congress, by 16,272 votes in 2016. He retained the seat in 2021 by prevailing over Congress’s Bani Hazarika with a margin of 12,497 votes.

Voting trends in the Dergaon Assembly segment during the Lok Sabha elections, while it was part of the Kaliabor Lok Sabha seat, reflect a competitive contest. Congress led AGP by 12,610 votes in 2009 and over BJP by 5,806 votes in 2014. AGP, with BJP as its ally, surged to a lead of 11,896 votes over Congress in 2019. BJP contested the Kaziranga Lok Sabha seat under an alliance with AGP in 2024 and established a massive lead of 42,172 votes over Congress.

Dergaon remained unaffected by the SIR 2025 as the number of voters increased from 172,278 registered voters in 2024 to 177,529 in the final electoral roll for the 2026 Assembly election. Earlier it stood at 168,272 voters in 2021, 160,772 in 2019, 144,363 in 2016 and 136,570 in 2011.

The Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes were evenly matched in Dergaon constituency with 11.74 per cent and 11.42 per cent of voters respectively. Muslims had a minuscule presence in Dergaon, which was a predominantly rural seat with 80.61 per cent of voters living in villages compared to 19.39 per cent based in urban areas. These figures were based on the 2011 Census reports, which might have changed following the constituency’s reorganisation in the 2023 delimitation exercise. The voter turnout has remained robust here with 78.16 per cent in 2011, 84.15 per cent in 2016, 73.41 per cent in 2019, 82.47 per cent in 2021 and 81.32 per cent in 2024.

The Dergaon constituency spans rural areas on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River. The topography is predominantly flat alluvial plains typical of the Brahmaputra Valley with occasional gentle undulations. The terrain supports agriculture but is prone to floods. Major rivers include the Brahmaputra flowing to the north, with tributaries like the Dhansiri and others influencing the landscape.

The economy depends on agriculture, rice farming, tea cultivation, and small trade, with rural livelihoods centred on farming and seasonal river resources. Fertile soils and abundant rainfall support these activities. Infrastructure includes good road connectivity via National Highway 37 passing through Dergaon, linking to Jorhat and Guwahati. Rail access is available at nearby stations like Dergaon or Golaghat. Basic amenities serve the town and villages, with ongoing developments in rural roads and flood management.

The district headquarters, Golaghat, is about 23 km south. Other nearby towns in Assam include Jorhat, about 26 km east, and Bokakhat to the east. State capital Dispur/Guwahati is around 282 km west.

While it is not yet clear if AGP or BJP would contest the Dergaon seat in the 2026 Assembly elections, which will be the first since it was de-reserved in 2023, what is certain is that the BJP-led NDA enjoys an upper hand over the rival Congress party in Dergaon. This does not mean Congress has no chance here since the outcome would be dictated by various factors, including how Dergaon’s economy and infrastructure improved when the BJP’s 10 years of rule is compared with the 15 years of Congress rule between 2001 and 2016.

Trinamool pulls off a surprise victory in Assam amid Bengal rout

The Trinamool Congress has won the Mandia seat in Assam. MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed defeated his opponents from the BJP, Congress and AIUDF. Ahmed's win gives a symbolic weight for Mamata Banerjee's TMC outside West Bengal and reflects Ahmed's local clout and hold on his seat.

How Himanta demolished Congress's 3G in Assam

The Congress's three-Gogoi alliance of Ahom leaders failed to turn Upper Assam away from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Often referred to as Chanakya of the Northeast, Sarma used a pincer attack of development and consolidation to boost BJP's tally and return to power in Assam.
