Goreshwar Assembly Constituency

Goreshwar is a small town with a Town Committee located in the Tamulpur district of Assam and situated on the north bank of the Brahmaputra River. Goreshwar is a part of the politically sensitive Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and is known for its cultural and educational institutions. It is a newly-created general (unreserved) Assembly constituency, one of the 11 segments of the Darrang-Udalguri Lok Sabha seat.

Being a newly created constituency, Goreshwar has no history of Assembly elections. The only window to gauge the mood of its voters came during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, in which the BJP led the Bodo People’s Front (BPF) by 48,914 votes. The BJP polled 86,494 votes in the Goreshwar segment, while the BPF received 37,580 votes, and Congress finished third with 23,677 votes.

The Goreshwar seat had 206,059 eligible voters on its final roll for the 2026 Assembly elections, witnessing an increase of 4,123 voters, following the SIR 2025, to its voter base that stood at 201,936 in 2024. The voter turnout was encouraging with 78.59 per cent in 2024.

The bulk of Goreshwar’s electorate previously belonged to the Tamulpur Assembly constituency. Goreshwar town and the surrounding villages were shifted out to form the new seat. Some boundary adjustments also involved parts of the Baksa district. The reorganisation, undertaken by the Delimitation Commission, was meant to balance population distribution and give Goreshwar its own representation in the state Assembly.

Demographics, based on available data largely from the 2011 Census proportions adjusted for the area and delimitation changes, indicate a strong Bodo community presence, alongside a significant presence of Assamese Hindus and Muslims in mixed rural-urban pockets. It has a predominantly rural character with a mix of tribal and non-tribal populations typical of the Bodoland region.

Goreshwar constituency covers parts of Tamulpur district on the north bank of the Brahmaputra River with flat alluvial plains, interspersed with wetlands, beels (lakes), and gentle undulations. The terrain supports paddy cultivation, jute, mustard, and some horticulture, but is prone to seasonal flooding from the Brahmaputra and its tributaries. Livelihoods depend mainly on agriculture, small trade, government jobs, and allied activities. Infrastructure includes road connectivity via National Highway 31 and other state highways, with ongoing developments in rural roads and basic irrigation facilities.

Goreshwar is located about 22 km from Rangia and around 16-20 km from Baihata Chariali. The district headquarters, Tamulpur, is approximately 25-30 km away. Other nearby towns include Nalbari (about 33-36 km) and Mangaldai (about 35 km). The state capital, Dispur/Guwahati, lies around 60-65 km south. Rail access is available at Goreswar railway station itself, which connects to Guwahati and other parts of Assam via the Northeast Frontier Railway. Local connectivity is mainly through road transport via buses, autos, and private vehicles.

Goreshwar and the surrounding areas in Tamulpur (part of BTR) have a rich historical and cultural legacy tied to the Bodo tribal community and the broader Brahmaputra Valley. The region is home to various indigenous groups, primarily the Bodos, along with Assamese and other communities. It is known for its vibrant Bodo traditions, festivals, such as Bwisagu (the Bodo New Year festival), folk tales, indigenous rituals, and strong community institutions like village councils. It features a blend of tribal customs with Assamese influences, educational institutions, and a gradual shift towards modern development while preserving indigenous identity.

If the voting pattern witnessed in the Goreshwar Assembly segment during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections is any indication to go by, the BJP is strongly placed to win the Goreshwar seat. What further strengthens its position is that the BPF joined the BJP-led ruling coalition recently, and instead of contesting against it, it will extend its support to the BJP’s candidate, Victor Kumar Das. He will be challenged by Pabitra Kumar Baro of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), which was a BJP ally until recently. The Congress-led opposition alliance has fielded Bapuram Boro of the CPI(M) as their candidate.

In addition to these three main contenders, there are six more candidates in the fray. They are Kabin Boro (Socialist Unity Centre of India-Communist), Rajan Chauhan (Trinamool Congress), Rajat Swargiary (Voters Party International) and Suruj Ali (Rashtriya Ulama Council). Arun Baishya and Md. Jamiruddin Ahmed, Independents, are also in the fray.

The main contest, however, is expected to be between the BJP and its erstwhile ally UPPL. Although the BPF is not contesting this Bodo-dominated seat, it will have lots at stake and work to ensure the victory of the BJP candidate since the victory of the UPPL nominee may weaken its hold in the Bodoland Territorial Region, as both the BPF and UPPL are quintessentially Bodo parties.

While the BJP enjoys the clear upper hand, it will be worth watching if the BJP’s Victor Das will justify his name and emerge victorious in the maiden election in Goreshwar constituency in the 2026 Assembly elections.
