Karimganj North Assembly Constituency

Karimganj North is a general unreserved Assembly constituency in Assam’s Sribhumi district, formerly Karimganj district until it was renamed in 2024. It is one of the six segments of the Karimganj Lok Sabha seat. Karimganj North comprises the northern parts of the town and its surrounding rural areas, including a cluster of villages, which gives it a mixed urban-rural outlook, with approximately 98 villages under its jurisdiction. It remains predominantly rural with 72.87 per cent rural voters compared to 27.13 per cent urban electors, dominated by Bengali-speaking communities, agrarian groups, small traders, and mixed ethnic populations typical of the Barak Valley region.

Established in 1951, Karimganj North has participated in 16 Assembly elections so far, including the by-election held in 2000. It has traditionally given a mixed verdict with the Congress party winning the seat six times, the BJP on four occasions, Independent leaders thrice, while the Praja Socialist Party, the CPI and the AGP have held this seat once each. The BJP and the Congress party have had three consecutive wins each, suggesting that the constituency has moved away from the swinging mood of its voters lately.

Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha won the Karimganj North seat thrice in a row beginning in 2011, when he defeated the BJP’s four-time legislator Mission Ranjan Das by 17,770 votes, which declined drastically to just 468 votes in 2016. Purkayastha prevailed over Manash Das of the BJP by 8,324 votes in 2021.

The voting trends in the Karimganj North Assembly segment during the Lok Sabha elections reflect a similar shifting loyalty of the voters. The AIUDF led the Congress party in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls by 3,111 votes, while the BJP finished a close third. The BJP surged ahead and established a lead of 4,618 votes over the AIUDF in 2014 and 14,740 votes in 2019. The BJP maintained its lead in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, as it led the Congress party by 9,398 votes.

Elector numbers have shown significant growth. It had 259,644 eligible voters on its final elector roll for the 2026 Assembly elections following the 2025 SIR, marking a marginal decline of 714 voters from the roll of 260,358 voters in 2024. Earlier, it stood at 198,921 in 2021, 186,016 in 2019, 170,762 in 2016 and 157,316 in 2011. Muslims formed 52.90 per cent of its voters and Scheduled Castes 10.14 per cent, while the Scheduled Tribes had a symbolic presence with mere 0.12 per cent of voters. Voter turnout has remained consistent with 79.97 per cent in 2011, 78.12 per cent in 2014, 76.25 per cent in 2016, 75.17 per cent in 2019, 77.83 per cent in 2021 and 79.21 per cent in 2024.

The Karimganj North constituency covers parts of the Sribhumi district in the Barak Valley with flat alluvial plains along the Kushiyara and Longai rivers, interspersed with low hillocks and fertile lowlands. The terrain supports paddy farming, some tea gardens, and other agriculture, but is prone to seasonal flooding from rivers like the Kushiyara, Longai, and Singla. Livelihoods in Karimganj North depend mainly on paddy cultivation, small trade, border-related activities, and agriculture-related work. Fertile soils and abundant rainfall sustain these activities. Infrastructure includes road connectivity via national and state highways linking to nearby areas, rail access at Karimganj station, and basic amenities in the town, with ongoing developments in rural roads and irrigation.

The nearest major town is the district headquarters, Sribhumi, formerly Karimganj, with the constituency incorporating the northern parts of the town. Other nearby towns include Patharkandi to the west, about 20-30 km away, and Hailakandi to the east, roughly 40-50 km away. The state capital, Dispur/Guwahati, lies around 300-350 km north. The constituency lies close to the international border with Bangladesh in the south and west, with the Kushiyara River forming part of the natural boundary and land ports like Sutarkandi, about 14 km from Sribhumi town, facilitating trade.  This proximity influences the local economy, migration patterns, and cross-border interactions.

.Karimganj North has a notable wildlife presence typical of the Barak Valley's reserve forests and fringes. Human-wildlife conflicts occur in forest villages with jackals, civets, and occasional elephant incursions, though large mammals like Asian elephants have largely vanished from much of the valley due to habitat loss.

Unlike other constituencies of Assam, Karimganj North Assembly constituency witnessed a huge spike in its voter base during the 2023 delimitation exercise, which is believed to have diluted its status as a Muslim-majority seat to certain extent. What is notable is that even before the delimitation, the BJP won the Karimganj North Assembly seat thrice before the Congress upstaged it, and has been leading consistently in this segment in the last all three Lok Sabha polls. This, however, cannot be attributed to the love of the local Muslims for the BJP. The real reason was the division of Muslim votes due to the presence of several Muslim candidates and the consolidation of the Hindu voters behind the BJP. The 2023 delimitation has further changed the voter demography, as its voter base increased by 61,437 electors. Above all, what rings a bell for the Congress party is that its thrice victorious legislator Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha joined the BJP in 2024, forcing the Congress party to name little-known Jakaria Ahmed as its candidate for the 2026 election, hoping there is no split of the Muslim votes. With Purkayastha in its fold now, and a huge change in voter demography, the BJP has all reasons to hope that it would be able to snatch the seat back from the Congress party.

The ceremony drew Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nirmala Sitharaman and several NDA chief ministers. The NDA returned to power with a sweeping two-thirds majority in last month’s Assembly polls. The BJP alone won 82 seats, marking the first time that the party got past the majority mark of 64. Sarma became the first non-Congress leader in Assam to secure two back-to-back terms as chief minister. Stay tuned to indiatoday.tech for all updates.

Trinamool pulls off a surprise victory in Assam amid Bengal rout

The Trinamool Congress has won the Mandia seat in Assam. MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed defeated his opponents from the BJP, Congress and AIUDF. Ahmed's win gives a symbolic weight for Mamata Banerjee's TMC outside West Bengal and reflects Ahmed's local clout and hold on his seat.

How Himanta demolished Congress's 3G in Assam

The Congress's three-Gogoi alliance of Ahom leaders failed to turn Upper Assam away from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Often referred to as Chanakya of the Northeast, Sarma used a pincer attack of development and consolidation to boost BJP's tally and return to power in Assam.
