Kaipamangalam Assembly Constituency

Kaipamangalam Assembly Constituency is located in the Thrissur district of Kerala and is assigned Constituency No. 69 out of the 140 seats in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. It is a part of the Chalakudy Lok Sabha seat for national Parliamentary elections and is a general or unreserved seat.

Geography and Administrative Profile

Kaipamangalam is located in the Kodungallur Taluk of the Thrissur district in central Kerala's coastal strip. It is made up of  Edavilangu, Edathiruthy, Eriyad, Kaipamangalam, Mathilakam, Perinjanam and Sreenarayanapuram Panchayats in Kodungallur Taluk. The region's proximity to the Arabian Sea shapes local livelihoods, with service sectors, remittances from individuals employed abroad and outside the state, and fishing, agriculture, and related enterprises providing a substantial economic base.

The electorate and voter participation

According to the Election Commission of India data for the 2021 Assembly election, Kaipamangalam has a substantial voter base for a coastal constituency in central Kerala, with around  174025 registered voters. Kaipamangalam reported a high voter turnout of around 78.2 percent in the 2021 elections, demonstrating substantial participation in both rural and urban wards.

Politics and History of Representation

After delimitation, Kaipamangalam was created in 2008 and has subsequently developed into a constituency where the Communist Party of India (CPI) has made significant inroads. The region was a part of neighbouring constituencies with different political views before delimitation, but ever since it was established, it has been a major battleground between the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF), with third-front candidates occasionally showing up.

V. S. Sunil Kumar (CPI) won the seat in the first election following delimitation (2011), giving the LDF an early triumph. In 2016 and 2021, E. T. Taison Master succeeded him, keeping the seat for CPI with a strong mandate and building on the Left's previous victories.

Kerala Assembly Election Results for 2021

With 73,161 votes, or a 53.76 percent vote share, E. T. Taison Master (CPI, LDF) was elected. The runner-up, Sobha Subin of the Indian National Congress, or UDF, received 50,463 votes, or 37.08 percent. With 9,066 votes (6.66%), C. D. Sreelal (BDJS), part of NDA, had a moderate third-party representation. The remaining votes were split between NOTA and candidates from smaller parties.

Social and Economic Features

The economy of the constituency combines elements of the modern and traditional. While fishing is still important in coastal wards, coconut, paddy, and vegetable production are supported by coastal panchayats. Local retail, service, and commerce sectors are served by market hubs in panchayats like Kaipamangalam and Perinjanam. Similar to many other areas in Kerala, household incomes and consumer spending are greatly increased by remittances from non-resident Keralites employed abroad, especially in the Gulf.

Voter Behaviour and Electoral Dynamics

Since the constituency's creation, the LDF has maintained a steady lead through CPI, but Kaipamangalam's electoral dynamics have consistently shown multi-front competition. To achieve consistent victories, LDF (CPI) has made use of grassroots networks, organisational power, and policy-focused advocacy. UDF (INC) continues to be the main opponent, frequently focusing support on local development and leadership narratives. Although they haven't yet turned it into a victory, third front and smaller parties (BDJS, SDPI, WPOI, etc.) occasionally garner sizable vote shares, indicating the constituency's receptivity to different viewpoints.
