Puthukkad Assembly constituency is located in the Thrissur district of Kerala. It is the constituency No. 71 of the 140 seats in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. It is a part of the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency for national Parliamentary elections and is a general or unreserved seat.

Administrative and Geographical Profile

The Puthukkad constituency, which is anchored by Puthukkad town, a commercial and transportation hub situated along National Highway 544 and the Shoranur–Cochin railway line, consists of a mixture of urban wards and rural panchayats. It consists of Alagappanagar, Mattathur, Nenmanikkara, Parappukkara, Puthukkad, Varandarappilly and Trikkur Panchayats in Mukundapuram Taluk and Vallachira Panchayat in Thrissur Taluk.

Voter participation and the electorate

The Puthukkad constituency has about 201192 registered voters for the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election, according to official figures from the Election Commission of India. The voter turnout for the election was around 77.68 percent.

Political History and Representation

With representation largely shifting between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF), Puthukkad has a competitive political past that reflects larger political competition. Both the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] have had spells of influence here over the years, frequently depending on regional concerns and candidate profiles. Prof. C Raveendranath of the CPI(M) won the election in 2011 and 2016 assembly elections.

Kerala Assembly Election Results for 2021

With  73365 votes, or 46.94 percent of the total valid votes cast, K. K. Ramachandran of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) won the election handily. Following him was the Indian National Congress's Sunil Anthikkad (Sunilkumar P. V.), who garnered 46,012 votes, or 29.44% of the total vote. With 34,893 votes (22.33%), A. Nagesh of the Bharatiya Janata Party came in third, indicating a sizable BJP presence in the constituency. A total of 1,069 voters (0.68%) selected the NOTA option.

Social and Economic Features

With the help of irrigation from backwaters and canal networks, the surrounding rural wards cultivate vegetables, paddy, coconut, bananas, and tapioca. Professional work, retail, hotel, and transportation are all supported by Puthukkad's urban centre. The existence of Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) and its linked research facilities promotes research, employment, and associated economic activities. Similar to many areas of central Kerala, household earnings and spending patterns are significantly influenced by remittances from families whose members work outside of India, particularly in the Gulf.

Voter Behaviour and Electoral Dynamics

The LDF maintains organisational networks that appeal to labour organisations, rural communities, and voters who prioritise welfare, especially through CPI(M) and affiliated groups. The UDF (INC) continues to be strong in urban and semi-urban regions thanks to heritage party networks and development themes. Although its vote share has not yet resulted in legislative seats in this constituency, the National Democratic Alliance (BJP) has increased its presence.
