Chengam Assembly Constituency

Chengam, Constituency no 62, is a predominantly rural and hill–foothill Assembly constituency in Tiruvannamalai district, marked by dryland farming, tribal settlements, forest-edge villages, and chronic water scarcity. Its political behaviour is shaped by livelihood insecurity, welfare dependence, and last-mile governance, making it a quiet but structurally important seat.

Elections here hinge on booth-level welfare reach, water assurance, and trust in local leadership, not urban narratives.

Political & Social Character:

The electorate includes:

  • Dryland farmers and small cultivators
  • Scheduled Tribe communities in hill and forest belts
  • Dalit hamlets in rural pockets
  • OBC and MBC agrarian households
  • Women SHGs and welfare beneficiaries
  • Migrant labour families
  • Key influencers are panchayat leaders, tribal elders, SHG and Anganwadi networks, farmer groups, and ration shop-linked local figures. Voting is relationship-driven and welfare-sensitive.

Geography & Connectivity:

  • Located in south-west Tiruvannamalai district
  • Terrain includes hill ranges, forest fringes, and dry plains
  • Road access is mixed: decent on main routes, weak in interior villages
  • Challenges include poor last-mile roads, monsoon isolation, and limited bus services.

Hotspots:

  • Chengam town and taluk center
  • Hill and forest-edge tribal villages
  • Dryland farming belts
  • Interior SC settlements
  • Weekly market villages
  • Each cluster reacts to different mixes of water stress, welfare access, and connectivity.

Core Issues:

  • Drinking water scarcity and tanker dependence
  • Lack of irrigation and borewell failure
  • Poor rural road connectivity
  • Limited healthcare access and transport
  • School staffing gaps and dropouts
  • Human–wildlife conflict near forest areas

Voter Mood:

  • Farmers: water security and input support
  • Tribal communities: dignity, healthcare, access
  • Women voters: water, ration supply, MGNREGA
  • Youth: basic skills and local jobs
  • Elderly: pensions and healthcare
  • Chengam voters reward consistent presence and dependable delivery over rhetoric.

While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
