Sankarapuram Assembly Constituency

Sankarapuram, Constituency no 79, is a low-noise but politically sensitive rural seat shaped by the Thenpennai (South Pennar) river system, tank irrigation, and proximity to forested belts. Voters here are pragmatic and memory-driven, rewarding leaders who ensure water security, crop protection, and accessible welfare delivery.

This is a relationship-first constituency where personal credibility outweighs party labels.

Political & Social Character:

The electorate broadly consists of:

  • Vanniyar (MBC) – numerically strong across most panchayats
  • Scheduled Castes – sizeable population in multiple villages
  • Small & marginal farmers (river & tank dependent)
  • Agricultural labourers
  • Forest-fringe communities
  • Women SHGs & welfare beneficiaries

Geography & Connectivity:

  • River-side villages along Thenpennai
  • Tank-fed interior agrarian belts
  • Forest-adjacent hamlets with access issues
  • Poor interior road connectivity
  • Seasonal flooding near river stretches; drought away from river
  • Water availability and protection define political satisfaction.

Hotspots:

  • Kalvarayan Hills
  • Mankombu Waterfalls
  • River-belt villages
  • Tank-irrigated agrarian panchayats
  • Dryland interior villages
  • SC-dominated habitations
  • Forest-fringe settlements
  • Weekly market villages

Core Issues:

  • River desilting & embankment strength
  • Tank maintenance & irrigation scheduling
  • Drinking water security
  • Interior road connectivity
  • PHC access & ambulance response
  • Welfare delays (pensions, housing, MGNREGA)
  • Human–wildlife conflict (forest fringe)

Voter Mood:

  • MLA must visit villages regularly
  • Presence during floods, droughts, and crop loss
  • Quick intervention in water & revenue disputes
  • Respectful engagement with caste elders & SHGs

Tamil Nadu CM Floor Test Highlights: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay comfortably won the floor test on Wednesday, securing support from 144 MLAs after the DMK staged a walkout, bringing down the effective majority mark to 88 from 117. While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
