Kaliaganj Assembly Constituency

Kaliaganj is a municipal town in Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal. It is a Scheduled Caste reserved Assembly constituency and one of the seven segments that form the Raiganj Lok Sabha seat. The constituency is made up of all 17 wards of the Kaliaganj municipality, the Kaliaganj community development block, along with Barua and Birghai gram panchayats of the Raiganj block.

Established in 1962, Kaliaganj has gone to the polls in 16 Assembly elections, including the byelection held in 2019 following the death of its sitting MLA. The Congress party has traditionally been the dominant force here, winning the seat 11 times, including a remarkable streak of seven consecutive victories between 1962 and 1982. The CPI(M) has won the seat three times, while the Trinamool Congress and the BJP have each won once. The fact that three different parties have won the last three elections shows that politics in Kaliaganj is in a state of flux.

Pramatha Nath Ray of the Congress reclaimed the constituency in 2011 by defeating Nani Gopal Rai of the CPI(M) with a margin of 7,290 votes. This was seen as revenge, since Nani Gopal Rai had defeated him in 2006 by 2,282 votes. Pramatha had earlier represented Kaliaganj as MLA in 1996 and 2001. He retained the seat in 2016, defeating Basanta Roy of the Trinamool Congress by a massive margin of 46,602 votes. His death led to the 2019 byelection in which the Trinamool Congress opened its account when its candidate Tapan Deb Singha defeated Kamal Chandra Sarkar of the BJP by a narrow margin of 2,414 votes. The Trinamool’s success was shortlived, as the BJP captured the seat in 2021 when Soumen Roy defeated Tapan Deb Singha by 21,820 votes.

The BJP’s rise in Kaliaganj is also visible in Lok Sabha voting trends. While the Congress led in the Assembly segment in 2009 and the CPI(M) in 2014, the BJP established its dominance with huge leads of 56,762 votes in 2019 and 57,944 votes in 2024. The Trinamool Congress has emerged as its main challenger.

Kaliaganj had 294,963 registered voters in 2024, up from 282,575 in 2021, 269,669 in 2019 and 250,603 in 2016. Scheduled Castes form the largest group with 53.20 per cent of the electorate, while Scheduled Tribes account for 4.84 per cent. Muslims make up about 5 per cent of the voters. The constituency is predominantly rural, with 84.90 per cent rural voters compared to 15.10 per cent urban. Voter turnout has remained strong, consistently above 80 per cent. It peaked at 87.91 per cent in 2011 and has gradually declined since then, standing at 86.08 per cent in 2016, 84.45 per cent in 2019, 84.92 per cent in 2021 and 81.82 per cent in 2024.

Kaliaganj is located in the northern part of West Bengal. The terrain is largely flat with fertile soil nourished by rivers such as the Kulik and Nagar. Agriculture is the backbone of the local economy, with paddy, jute and vegetables being the main crops. The area has basic infrastructure with schools, health centres and small industries, though largescale industrial development is limited. The nearest towns include Raiganj, the district headquarters, which is about 26 km away, and Islampur, which is around 111 km by road. Siliguri, the largest commercial hub in North Bengal, lies about 205 kilometres by road. Kolkata, the state capital, is nearly 420 kilometres away by road, with train services linking Kaliaganj and Kolkata in 9 to 10 hours. Kaliaganj has its own railway station on the Barsoi-Radhikapur branch line, which was electrified in 2023. The station connects the town to Raiganj, Siliguri and Kolkata, while a new rail link to Buniadpur is under development.

The BJP appears to have a clear advantage in Kaliaganj going into the 2026 Assembly elections. The CongressLeft Front alliance has been reduced to a marginal force, polling less than 8 per cent of the votes in the last two elections. The Trinamool Congress is still struggling to establish a strong base here. The BJP, on the other hand, has consolidated its position with a victory and two decisive margins in the Lok Sabha polls, making it the party most likely to retain the Kaliaganj seat in 2026.

Bengal Post-Poll Updates: TMC appoints Kolkata Mayor as Chief Whip, Deputy LoPs also named

West Bengal witnessed a major political development on Saturday as Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as Chief Minister at a high-profile ceremony in Kolkata. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Union ministers, and Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states. During the ceremony, PM Modi was seen touching the feet of 98-year-old BJP veteran Makhanlal Sarkar, drawing attention from leaders present at the venue. In a key administrative move, retired IAS officer and former Election Commission special observer for SIR, Subrata Gupta, has been appointed as advisor to the new Chief Minister. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called upon the Left and other opposition parties to unite and form a "joint platform" against the BJP. In a parallel development, the Trinamool Congress appointed senior leader and 10-time MLA Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.

Video: Yogi Adityanath gifts saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari at his oath-taking

Yogi Adityanath on Saturday presented a saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari, shortly after the latter took oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal. The crowd also erupted into a loud cheer as the scene unfolded at the swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata. This was at least the second such instance in recent weeks when the duo's bonhomie was witnessed publicly. Earlier, during the election campaign in the state, a powerful scene was witnessed when Adhikari bowed down at the feet of the UP Chief Minister as a mark of respect.
