Kumarganj Assembly Constituency

Kumarganj, a block-level town in West Bengal’s Dakshin Dinajpur district, is a general category Assembly constituency under the Balurghat Lok Sabha seat. It comprises the entire Kumarganj community development block along with Ashokegram, Basuria, Chaloon and Uday gram panchayats of Gangarampur block.

Established in 1967, Kumarganj has participated in 14 Assembly elections and has earned a reputation for voting in sync with the party that eventually forms the government in the state. The Congress and its offshoot, Bangla Congress, dominated the early years, winning the first four elections. From 1977 to 2006, the CPI(M) held the seat for seven consecutive terms, mirroring the Left Front’s uninterrupted rule in Bengal. The Trinamool Congress broke through in 2011 and has since retained the seat in three successive elections.

The Trinamool’s initial wins were narrow. In 2011, Mahmuda Begum defeated CPI(M)’s sitting MLA Mafuja Khatun by 4,218 votes. In 2016, Toraf Hossain Mandal edged past Khatun again, this time by just 3,496 votes. The party gained breathing space only in 2021, when Mandal widened the margin to 29,367 votes against BJP’s Manas Sarkar. Sarkar pushed Congress’s Chaudhuri Nargis Banu to third place, despite her representing the Congress-Left Front alliance.

Trends of parliamentary polls in Kumarganj have followed a similar arc. Trinamool began leading in the Assembly segment during the Lok Sabha elections from 2014, when it overtook the Revolutionary Socialist Party by 15,547 votes. In 2019, the lead increased to 18,759 votes, with the BJP emerging as the main challenger. By 2024, Trinamool’s lead rose to 23,039 votes, reinforcing its position as the preferred party in Kumarganj. This consolidation has coincided with the decline of the Left Front, whose vote share dropped from 39.61 per cent in 2016 to 5.9 per cent in 2019, briefly rose in 2021 to 10.23 per cent when Congress contested, and fell again to 4.9 per cent in 2024.

Kumarganj had 210,803 registered voters in 2024, up from 203,896 in 2021 and 194,146 in 2019. Muslim voters form the largest bloc at 39.40 per cent, followed by Scheduled Castes at 22.70 per cent and Scheduled Tribes at 16.32 per cent. The constituency is entirely rural, with no urban voters. Voter turnout dipped below 80 per cent for the first time in 2024, registering 79.22 per cent, compared to 83.87 per cent in 2021, 83.55 per cent in 2019 and 85.86 per cent in 2016.

Kumarganj lies in the Barind Tract, a region marked by flat terrain and alluvial soil that supports agriculture as the backbone of the local economy. The Atreyee River flows through the block, entering from Bangladesh and passing through Kumarganj and Balurghat before returning to Bangladesh. The river often overflows during the monsoon, causing seasonal floods. Paddy, mustard and jute are the principal crops, while small-scale trading and seasonal migration supplement household incomes.

Infrastructure in Kumarganj is modest but functional. The town is connected by road to Gangarampur and Balurghat, though rail access remains limited. Balurghat, the district headquarters, is about 30 km away and serves as the main hub for education, healthcare and transport. Kumarganj is roughly 395 km from Kolkata, the state capital.

Nearby towns include Gangarampur (18 km), Hili (25 km), and Tapan (40 km). Kumarganj shares borders with Uttar Dinajpur district, whose major town, Raiganj, lies about 75 km away. It is also close to the Bangladesh border, with the nearest crossing point at Hili. The Bihar border is not far either, with Kishanganj town located around 95 km away.

With its ever-increasing victory margins in Assembly elections and growing leads in parliamentary polls, the Trinamool Congress emerges as the frontrunner to win the Kumarganj constituency in the 2026 Assembly elections. However, the BJP can also fancy its chances of causing an upset victory, which would depend on factors such as its ability to penetrate deeper into the non-Muslim voters, especially the Scheduled Caste and the Scheduled Tribe voters. At the same time, the BJP would hope and pray for the revival of the Left Front-Congress alliance, which can split the Trinamool Congress's vote base. It would be interesting to watch if Kumarganj’s unblemished record of the parties it votes for forming the government will continue in the 2026 elections.

Bengal Post-Poll Updates: TMC appoints Kolkata Mayor as Chief Whip, Deputy LoPs also named

West Bengal witnessed a major political development on Saturday as Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as Chief Minister at a high-profile ceremony in Kolkata. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Union ministers, and Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states. During the ceremony, PM Modi was seen touching the feet of 98-year-old BJP veteran Makhanlal Sarkar, drawing attention from leaders present at the venue. In a key administrative move, retired IAS officer and former Election Commission special observer for SIR, Subrata Gupta, has been appointed as advisor to the new Chief Minister. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called upon the Left and other opposition parties to unite and form a "joint platform" against the BJP. In a parallel development, the Trinamool Congress appointed senior leader and 10-time MLA Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.

Video: Yogi Adityanath gifts saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari at his oath-taking

Yogi Adityanath on Saturday presented a saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari, shortly after the latter took oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal. The crowd also erupted into a loud cheer as the scene unfolded at the swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata. This was at least the second such instance in recent weeks when the duo's bonhomie was witnessed publicly. Earlier, during the election campaign in the state, a powerful scene was witnessed when Adhikari bowed down at the feet of the UP Chief Minister as a mark of respect.
