Barpeta Assembly Election 2026
Barpeta Assembly Constituency

Barpeta is a district headquarters town in Western Assam, known as Satra Nagari or the Temple Town due to its numerous Vaishnavite satras (monasteries). The area serves as the gateway to Manas National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and tiger reserve, about 40-43 km north, which is famous for its biodiversity, including pygmy hog, golden langur, and wild buffalo.

Barpeta Assembly constituency was established in 1957 as a general (unreserved) seat and remained so until the 2023 delimitation, when the Delimitation Commission converted it into a Scheduled Caste (SC)-reserved constituency with redrawn boundaries. It now covers the Barpeta Municipal Board, Sarthebari Town Committee, and parts of Barpeta, Chenga, Gumafulbari, Mandia, Sarukhetri, Pakabetbari, and Bhowanipur development blocks. It forms one of the 10 segments of the Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency.

The seat has participated in all 15 Assembly elections held in Assam, electing 16 MLAs, as it was a twin-seat in 1957. Congress has won six times, Praja Socialist Party and Independents thrice each, AGP twice, while All India Indira Congress (T), which later merged with Congress, and AIUDF once each.

Abdur Rahim Khan of AIUDF won in 2011, defeating AGP’s sitting MLA Gunindra Nath Das by 12,309 votes. In 2016, AGP reclaimed it with Gunindra Nath Das defeating Congress’s Abdur Rahim Ahmed by 5,810 votes. In 2021, Abdur Rahim Ahmed (Congress) snatched it back, prevailing over AGP’s Gunindra Nath Das by 44,719 votes.

The Barpeta segment has seen fluctuating leads in the Lok Sabha polls too. Congress led the AGP by 10,916 votes in 2009, and AIUDF led the BJP by 11,652 votes in 2014. Congress surged ahead by 28,339 votes over the AGP in 2019, and AIUDF led the BJP by 11,652 votes in 2024.

Barpeta had 170,767 eligible voters on its roll for the 2026 Assembly elections, witnessing a marginal increase from 169,275 registered voters it had in 2024. The 2023 delimitation brought a huge change, reducing the voter base by 38,261 from 207,536 in 2021. These figures mask deeper shifts, as several Muslim-majority villages were reportedly shifted to neighbouring constituencies while Scheduled Caste-majority areas were added, alongside routine deletion of ineligible names and inclusion of new electors. Earlier voter numbers stood at 195,851 in 2019, 181,058 in 2016, 166,846 in 2014, and 154,102 in 2011.

Before delimitation, Muslims formed 57.80 per cent of its voters, Scheduled Castes 8.28 per cent, and Scheduled Tribes 1.74 per cent. These demographics have altered significantly, though the latest details are not yet available. The seat is expected to retain its overwhelmingly rural character, with 78.18 per cent rural and 21.82 per cent urban voters.

Voter turnout has traditionally been high with 84.83 per cent in 2011, 85.60 per cent in 2014, 89.55 per cent in 2016, 88.25 per cent in 2019, 88.12 per cent in 2021, and 82.86 per cent in 2024.

Barpeta’s famous monasteries were established in the 16th century by saints like Srimanta Sankardev and Madhabdev. It carries a rich cultural and religious history tied to Neo-Vaishnavism, with landmarks such as the Barpeta Satra, founded in 1583 by Madhabdev, Patbaushi Satra, Sundaridiya Satra, and others that preserve traditional Assamese art, music, and Sattriya dance. The town also features the Dargah of Syed Shahnur Dewan and Pari Hareswar Devalaya. Three rivers, Chaulkhowa, Mora Nodi (Dead River), and Nakhanda, all tributaries of the Brahmaputra, flow through or near the town, contributing to its fertile landscape of low-lying plains, ponds, and small hillocks in parts.

Barpeta’s economy is primarily agrarian, with paddy, jute, and vegetables as key crops, supplemented by fishing in beels and ponds. Infrastructure includes basic roads, markets, schools, and health facilities, with National Highway 31 providing connectivity. Rail access is through Barpeta Road Railway Station, well-linked to Guwahati and other parts of India.

Barpeta lies about 90-95 km northwest of the state capital Dispur/Guwahati, roughly 100-110 km from Mangaldoi, the district HQ of Darrang, and around 50-60 km from Nalbari. Other nearby towns include Pathsala, about 30-40 km, and Bilasipara, further west. The constituency is in the Brahmaputra Valley plains, away from direct international borders but influenced by proximity to Bhutan in north.

Barpeta is like new wine in an old bottle, yet to be tasted, as this will be its first election as an SC-reserved seat with major voter demography changes. Muslims, though still present in sizeable numbers, as seen in AIUDF's lead in the 2024 Lok Sabha segment, are no longer eligible to contest. One thing certain is that Barpeta is headed for a close and intense contest in the 2026 Assembly elections that could go down to the wire.

Trinamool pulls off a surprise victory in Assam amid Bengal rout

The Trinamool Congress has won the Mandia seat in Assam. MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed defeated his opponents from the BJP, Congress and AIUDF. Ahmed's win gives a symbolic weight for Mamata Banerjee's TMC outside West Bengal and reflects Ahmed's local clout and hold on his seat.

How Himanta demolished Congress's 3G in Assam

The Congress's three-Gogoi alliance of Ahom leaders failed to turn Upper Assam away from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Often referred to as Chanakya of the Northeast, Sarma used a pincer attack of development and consolidation to boost BJP's tally and return to power in Assam.
