Dump DMK? Congress rejects TVK tie-up talk after Vijay's father's outreach

With Congress leading in just a handful of seats in Tamil Nadu, an internal report to Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge flags support for TVK, even as Vijay's party continues to surge in Assembly trends.

Tamil Nadu’s post-poll political realignment debate has intensified, but the Congress leadership appears to be treading carefully as it balances its long-standing alliance with the DMK against growing calls to explore a future alignment with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

Senior Congress leader K C Venugopal has clarified that the party remains committed to its present partnership with the DMK, even as internal discussions and reports from the state unit suggest a rethink.

“DMK is a solid partner,” Venugopal said, indicating that while political scenarios may evolve, there is no immediate shift in alliance strategy. He added that decisions regarding future partnerships cannot be speculated at this stage.

His remarks come amid growing chatter within the Congress ecosystem about whether the party should recalibrate its Tamil Nadu strategy after a weak electoral performance and the rise of actor-politician Vijay-led TVK.

CONGRESS UNIT FLAGS TVK POSSIBILITY

According to internal sources, the Tamil Nadu Congress has submitted an assessment report to party president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi, suggesting that the party may need to “reassess its positioning” and consider whether supporting TVK could be strategically beneficial in the changing political landscape.

The report reportedly reflects concern over the Congress’s reduced electoral footprint, with the party securing only one seat and leading in a few others.

However, despite such recommendations, the leadership has not endorsed any immediate shift away from the DMK.

MIXED SIGNALS INSIDE CONGRESS

While Venugopal reaffirmed the DMK alliance, other voices within the party have openly floated alternative political calculations.

Senior leader Praveen Chakravarthy described Congress and TVK as “natural allies,” arguing that both share ideological alignment and a similar political vision.

He also credited Vijay’s campaign for reshaping the state’s political discourse, calling it a rare phenomenon in Tamil Nadu politics.

However, even he acknowledged internal hesitation, suggesting the party may have “missed an opportunity” to reposition itself earlier.

TVK SURGE RESHAPES TN POLITICAL EQUATIONS

The rise of TVK has significantly altered electoral dynamics in the state, with the party emerging as a major force in its debut election and leading in a large number of seats.

The surge has triggered speculation across political circles about possible future alignments, especially as traditional Dravidian parties face shifting voter sentiment.

Vijay’s father, filmmaker S A Chandrasekhar, has also publicly urged Congress to reconsider its approach, arguing that a partnership with TVK could help the party regain its influence.

CONGRESS HOLDS LINE WITH DMK - FOR NOW

Despite growing internal and external pressure, the official position remains unchanged: Congress continues to stand with the DMK, a decades-old alliance that has defined much of its electoral strategy in Tamil Nadu.

For now, Venugopal’s message underscores continuity over disruption, even as the broader political environment signals possible realignments ahead.

As counting trends and political negotiations evolve, Tamil Nadu’s opposition landscape appears to be entering a phase of uncertainty, where today’s alliances may be tested by tomorrow’s electoral realities.
