A woman jail official in Madhya Pradesh's Satna has married a former inmate who had served a life sentence in a murder case, in a relationship that began inside the prison and eventually culminated in an interfaith marriage.

According to reports, Firoza Khatoon, an Assistant Superintendent at Satna Central Jail, met Dharmendra Singh while working as the warrant in-charge at the prison. Singh, a resident of Chandla in Chhatarpur district, was serving a life sentence in connection with the 2007 murder of a councillor and the subsequent burial of the body.

During his time in jail, Singh reportedly assisted prison authorities with warrant-related work, bringing him in regular contact with Khatoon. Their professional interactions gradually developed into friendship and later into a relationship.

Singh was released around four years ago after serving nearly 14 years in prison, reportedly on grounds of good conduct. Following his release, the couple decided to formalise their relationship through marriage.

The wedding took place on May 5 in Chhatarpur district. According to reports, Singh changed his name on the wedding invitation cards to avoid social scrutiny. The marriage ceremony was conducted with Vedic rituals and chants.

The interfaith marriage reportedly did not receive the support of Khatoon's Muslim family members, who did not attend the ceremony. In their absence, Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) district vice-president Rajbahadur Mishra and his wife performed the ceremonial 'kanyadaan'. Members of the Bajrang Dal were also present at the event.

The marriage has since become a major talking point in the region, drawing attention for its unusual circumstances and the social and religious barriers the couple crossed.

Officials, employees and inmates associated with Satna Central Jail have also extended wishes to the newlywed couple.
