If you're planning a road trip to Nepal, things just got much easier. Indian tourists travelling by private vehicles will no longer have to wait for hours at the border to get vehicle permits.

Nepal has introduced a new online registration system for Indian vehicles entering Nepal, allowing travellers to complete the process from home.

This move is expected to save time, reduce congestion at border points, and make cross-border travel smoother.

Whether you're heading for a quick getaway or a longer stay, this new system removes one of the biggest hassles of road travel to Nepal.

NO MORE LONG WAITS AT THE BORDER

Until now, travellers entering Nepal by road had to stop at customs checkpoints to get a temporary vehicle permit. This often meant standing in long queues, dealing with paperwork, and facing delays. In many cases, it also caused traffic jams at border crossings.

With the new system in place, that process is now digital.

Travellers can register their vehicle details online, pay the required fees, and receive a QR code before starting their journey.

At the border, all they need to do is show this QR code and proceed without delays.

ONLINE PERMIT AND EASY RENEWAL

  • One of the biggest advantages of this new system is flexibility.
  • Travellers can apply for permits from home
  • Fees can be paid online or via bank counters
  • A QR code is issued for entry and travel within Nepal

If your travel period ends and you want to extend your stay, you no longer need to revisit customs offices. The permit can now be renewed online from within Nepal itself.

Earlier, travellers had to either return to the customs point or pay penalties for overstaying. This change removes that inconvenience completely.

WHAT THE GOVERNMENT SAYS

The system was launched by Nepal’s Finance Minister, Dr Swarnim Wagle, as part of efforts to improve public service delivery.

He said the initiative is aimed at ensuring faster, simpler, and more efficient services for tourists, while reducing difficulties faced at border areas.

Customs Department Director General Shyam Prasad Bhandari added that the process is now fully digital, allowing travellers to self-declare vehicle details online. This is expected to make the system more transparent and efficient.

HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS

To use the service:

  • Visit the Customs Department website
  • Select the TIV (Temporary Import Vehicle) option
  • Fill in vehicle and traveller details
  • Pay the required tax/fee online
  • Download the QR code sent via email
  • This QR code must be shown at the border and during travel within Nepal.

WHO BENEFITS?

The new system applies to:

  • Indian tourists travelling by private vehicles
  • Tourists from other countries entering Nepal via India
  • Travellers from neighbouring countries like Bangladesh
  • Officials say the service is part of the Nepal National Single Window System and may be expanded further in the future.
