A dress worn by US War Secretary Pete Hegseth’s wife Jennifer Rauchet at the White House Correspondents' Dinner has sparked a debate online debate. Rauchet attended the event alongside her husband in a pink dress on April 25.

Soon after, images circulated online and social media users pointed out that her gown closely resembled low-cost designs sold by Chinese fast-fashion giants like Shein and Temu.

A nearly-identical dress is available for purchase on Shein’s UK website for almost Rs 3.9k.

She paired the dress with Steve Madden sandals worth Rs 13k and carried a floral applique bag available on Amazon.

What might have been a routine red-carpet discussion quickly escalated into a political argument.

Critics pointed to an apparent contradiction: a figure associated with “America First” politics seemingly wearing an imported, inexpensive garment at a time of strained U.S.-China trade relations. For some, the issue wasn’t just style - it was symbolism (like it is always when it comes to political dressing).

The controversy gained traction after Parsons student Ella Devi posted about the dress on X. Her post went viral, amassing millions of views and prompting widespread commentary from both fashion insiders and political observers.

Critics said that wearing cheap imported clothing didn’t match the nationalist views of Hegseth and his political circle.

A strong voice in the fashion industry Diet Prada also pointed out that this was not the first time Rauchet wore a Shein dress.

“In November of last year, she attended a state dinner in a gown that matches a product listing on Shein. And, the pink dress she wore to her husband’s swearing in ceremony also perfectly matches a product made by Shein’s brand Motf. Choosing an inexpensive option to conform to a family budget is one thing, but is it not a little ironic to wear outfits imported from overseas while being married to the ‘America First’ Secretary of Defense? And while attending important events, no less,” the Diet Prada post reads.

Not everyone agreed with the backlash though. Some defended Rauchet (and trolled Ella Devi), arguing that her choice made her appear more relatable and challenged the expectation that public figures must wear expensive designer clothing. Others accused critics of hypocrisy, suggesting that had she worn a luxury gown, she might have been attacked for elitism instead.

Several X users defended Jennifer Rauchet's outfit choice.

Beyond political arguments, the episode has reignited scrutiny of the fast-fashion industry itself. Companies like Shein and Temu have long faced criticism over labor practices, environmental impact, and the ultra-low pricing that many experts argue is only possible through exploitation.
