The state is home to ten national parks, including Bandhavgarh and Kanha National Park. Narmada is the longest river to flow in the state, followed by the Tapti River. Important ranges of hills are the Vindhya Range, Satpura Range, Mahadeo and Maikala ranges.
Cave works, fortresses, and ancient temples showcase the rich history of Madhya Pradesh. The walls of Bhimbetka rock shelters, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2003, are adorned with prehistoric paintings. One of the state's oldest historical monuments is the Sanchi Stupa, originally constructed by Ashoka. In addition to this, the Khajuraho temples, built by the Chandela Kings, are widely recognized for their erotic art and are visited by tourists from around the world. Other scenic sites include Amarkantak, Bandhavgarh, Orchha, Pachmarhi, etc.
