Bajali Assembly Constituency

Bajali is a town and the headquarters of the Bajali district in Lower Assam. It is a general (unreserved) Assembly constituency and one of the 10 Assembly segments of the Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency. The constituency, largely rural in character with minimal urban pockets, covers areas primarily from the erstwhile Bajali (Pt), parts of Jalah, and Sarupeta circles, including villages and polling stations around Pathsala (the main town and commercial hub) and surrounding rural areas like Dolor Pathar and others. It was carved out during the 2023 delimitation to achieve proportional voter distribution, drawing booths from multiple adjoining segments beyond just the old Sorbhog.

Bajali Assembly constituency was established in 2023 following recommendations of the Delimitation Commission, which reviewed all 126 constituencies of the Assam Legislative Assembly with the aim of proportionally distributing voters. Bajali was carved out of the Sorbhog Assembly constituency, while the Sorbhog constituency was abolished. For records, Sorbhog was established in 1951 and, in the 15 Assembly elections held there, the CPI(M) won the seat six times, Congress five times, while Independents and BJP held it twice each. Manoranjan Talukdar of the CPI(M) is the sitting MLA from the erstwhile Sorbhog, having won in 2021 by defeating the BJP’s Sankar Chandra Das with a margin of 10,262 votes.

It is pertinent to mention that the Sorbhog seat was not simply renamed as Bajali, since the new constituency incorporates areas and polling booths from several adjoining constituencies. Therefore, past elections in Sorbhog cannot serve as a direct yardstick to gauge party strength or edge in Bajali.

If any, the voting trend in the Bajali Assembly segment during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls can give a glimpse of the mood in this new constituency. The AGP, contesting the Barpeta Lok Sabha seat on behalf of the BJP-led NDA, led the Congress by a substantial margin of 41,586 votes in the segment. AGP’s Phani Bhushan Choudhury polled 76,170 votes compared to 34,584 for Congress’s Deep Bayan, with CPI(M)’s Manoranjan Talukdar finishing a distant third with 10,492 votes.

Bajali had 165,399 eligible voters in its final roll for the 2026 Assembly election, marginally up from 163,071 registered voters in 2024. The voter turnout in the lone election held in Bajali (2024 Lok Sabha) was impressive at 80.06 per cent.

Voter demography is not available for Bajali yet as a standalone constituency. Based on 2011 census figures, Bajali district had 67.90 per cent Hindus and 31.91 per cent Muslims, while the Bajali circle (core area) had 94.51 per cent Hindus and 5.34 per cent Muslims. These proportions may have shifted post-delimitation due to boundary adjustments, but the seat retains a predominantly Hindu-majority rural profile.

Bajali lies in the fertile Brahmaputra Valley plains of Lower Assam, with flat alluvial topography ideal for agriculture, interspersed with small ponds, beels, and low-lying areas prone to seasonal flooding. The region features no major rivers directly through the core town, but nearby tributaries and channels from the Brahmaputra system support irrigation and fishing. The economy is overwhelmingly agrarian, with paddy as the primary crop, alongside jute, vegetables, pulses, and some oilseeds. Sericulture and small-scale trade add to livelihoods. Infrastructure includes basic roads, markets, schools, and health centres, with good road links via National Highway 31 and state roads. Rail connectivity is strong through Pathsala Railway Station on the main line, connecting to Guwahati, Barpeta Road, and beyond.

Bajali (Pathsala area) is located about 100-110 km west of the state capital, Dispur/Guwahati, roughly 30-40 km east of Barpeta town, and around 20-30 km from Sorbhog and Howly. Other nearby towns include Nalbari (about 40-50 km east) and Bongaigaon (further north). The constituency has no direct international border adjacency, though the broader Lower Assam region is influenced by proximity to West Bengal (southwest) and Bhutan (north).

Bajali is set to go to the 2026 Assembly elections largely as an unknown quantity. If the voting trend observed during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls is any indicator, the BJP-led ruling NDA may enjoy an upper hand over its rivals. No specific pre-poll surveys focused solely on Bajali have emerged yet, but broader statewide opinion polls project a strong NDA position in Lower Assam regions, including the Barpeta Lok Sabha segment, with BJP-AGP alliances leading comfortably in vote shares and seats. As a fresh constituency without prior direct electoral history, local candidate appeal, alliance dynamics, and issues like agriculture, floods, and infrastructure will likely decide the outcome.

Trinamool pulls off a surprise victory in Assam amid Bengal rout

The Trinamool Congress has won the Mandia seat in Assam. MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed defeated his opponents from the BJP, Congress and AIUDF. Ahmed's win gives a symbolic weight for Mamata Banerjee's TMC outside West Bengal and reflects Ahmed's local clout and hold on his seat.

How Himanta demolished Congress's 3G in Assam

The Congress's three-Gogoi alliance of Ahom leaders failed to turn Upper Assam away from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Often referred to as Chanakya of the Northeast, Sarma used a pincer attack of development and consolidation to boost BJP's tally and return to power in Assam.
