Golakganj Assembly Constituency

Golakganj is a census town and revenue circle located in Assam’s Dhubri district and is a general unreserved Muslim-majority Assembly constituency. It is located barely 5 km from the India-Bangladesh border. Golakganj is one of the 11 Assembly segments of the Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency. Golakganj consists of the town area and a cluster of surrounding villages, giving it a predominantly rural outlook with around 150-200 villages under its coverage in the broader circle. It remains predominantly rural with only 3.08 per cent urban voters compared to 96.92 per cent village-based electors, dominated by agrarian communities, Bengali-speaking groups, and mixed ethnic populations typical of western Assam's Brahmaputra Valley plains.

Established in 1951, Dhubri has participated in all 15 Assembly elections held in Assam so far. The Congress party has won the seat seven times, Independent leaders and the CPI have emerged victorious thrice each, while the BJP has held two terms.

In 2011, Abu Taher Beparti of Congress retained the seat he had first won in 2006, defeating Ashwini Roy Sarkar of the BJP by 4,008 votes. The result flipped in 2016, as Ashwini Roy Sarkar wrested the seat for the BJP by defeating Congress’s Abdus Sobhan Ali Sarkar by 6,391 votes. Abdus Sobhan Ali Sarkar gained the Golakganj seat once again for the Congress party as he prevailed over the BJP’s Ashwini Roy Sarkar by 10,699 votes in 2021.

The voting trends witnessed in the Golakganj Assembly segment during the Lok Sabha elections reflect a different trend, with the Congress party far from dominating the elections. The AIUDF took the lead of 2,906 votes over the Congress party in 2009. The BJP surged to a lead of 17,262 votes over the AIUDF in 2014, while its ally AGP led the Congress party by 10,794 votes in 2019 and 29,025 votes in 2024.

Golakganj has had no impact of either the SIR 2025 or the 2023 delimitation, as its voter base has increased steadily. It had 203,876 eligible voters in the final roll for the 2026 Assembly elections, witnessing a marginal increase from 202,881 registered voters it had in 2024. Earlier, it stood at 202,358 in 2021, 190,440 in 2019, 177,087 in 2016 and 155,484 in 2011.

Muslims are the most dominant bloc with 54.40 per cent of voters, while the Scheduled Castes account for 5.74 per cent. The voter turnout has remained high, though it has tended to fluctuate a bit. It was 86.63 per cent in 2011, 88.39 per cent in 2014, 91.23 per cent in 2016, 88.06 per cent in 2019, 90.68 per cent in 2021 and 90.96 per cent in 2024.

The Golakganj constituency covers parts of the Dhubri district in western Assam with flat, alluvial plains along the east bank of the Gangadhar River and low-lying char (riverine island) areas typical of the Brahmaputra floodplain. The terrain supports paddy farming, jute cultivation, and other agriculture, but is highly prone to seasonal flooding and erosion from the Brahmaputra and its tributaries like the Gangadhar. Livelihoods in Golakganj depend mainly on paddy and jute cultivation, small trade, fishing in riverine areas, and agriculture-related activities. Fertile alluvial soils and abundant rainfall sustain these activities. Infrastructure includes road connectivity via national and state highways linking to nearby areas, rail access at Golakganj station (a key junction on the Fakiragram-Dhubri and New Cooch Behar-Golakganj lines), and basic amenities with ongoing developments in rural roads and flood protection.

The nearest major town is Dhubri, the district headquarters, about 25-30 km away. Other nearby towns include Bilasipara to the east, roughly 30-40 km away. The state capital, Dispur/Guwahati, lies around 250-300 km east. The constituency lies close to the international border with Bangladesh to the west and south (barely 5 km in parts, with the Gangadhar River forming a natural boundary), influencing local trade, smuggling concerns, migration patterns, and cross-border interactions.

Golakganj gained prominence in the early 20th century as the first railway station through which trains entered Assam territory when it was known as Tokrerchara. It was renamed Golakganj after Golak Chandra Barua, a rich landlord from nearby Gauripur who donated land for the railway construction by the British. The area saw visits by figures like Mahatma Gandhi and has sites like Sanyasidham (a devotional ashram associated with sanyasis/saints), reflecting its modest role in freedom movement links and local religious heritage.

Golakganj has refused to be treated as a stronghold of any particular party and tends to keep them all on their toes, so that its voters are not taken for granted. As a result, in the last seven elections, the Congress party, the BJP, and the AGP have won or led elections twice each, while the AIUDF led once. This puts Golakganj constituency on the edge of the knife for the 2026 Assembly election, in which every vote polled would matter. With a close and tough election at hand, the outcome can go either way, depending on the last-minute voter mobilisation.

The NDA returned to power with a sweeping two-thirds majority in last month’s Assembly polls. The BJP alone won 82 seats, marking the first time that the party got past the majority mark of 64. Sarma became the first non-Congress leader in Assam to secure two back-to-back terms as chief minister. Stay tuned to indiatoday.tech for all updates.

Trinamool pulls off a surprise victory in Assam amid Bengal rout

The Trinamool Congress has won the Mandia seat in Assam. MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed defeated his opponents from the BJP, Congress and AIUDF. Ahmed's win gives a symbolic weight for Mamata Banerjee's TMC outside West Bengal and reflects Ahmed's local clout and hold on his seat.

How Himanta demolished Congress's 3G in Assam

The Congress's three-Gogoi alliance of Ahom leaders failed to turn Upper Assam away from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Often referred to as Chanakya of the Northeast, Sarma used a pincer attack of development and consolidation to boost BJP's tally and return to power in Assam.
