Erode East, Constituency no 98, is a pure urban seat where elections are won through turnout engineering, welfare assurance, and daily visibility. Ideology has limited impact; access to power and continuity of benefits decide votes.
Erode holds historic significance as the birthplace of social reformer E. V. Ramasamy, widely known as Periyar. His 100-year-old ancestral home, now preserved as the Thanthai Periyar Memorial House, stands on Periyar Street and functions as a museum showcasing his life, photographs, and personal belongings, drawing visitors interested in Tamil Nadu’s reformist history.
The Erode East Assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu has witnessed two by-elections in quick succession following the demise of elected representatives.
The first by-poll was necessitated after the death of Congress MLA E. Thirumahan Everaa (also known as EVKS Thirumagan). In the 2023 by-election that followed, his father, senior Congress leader E. V. K. S. Elangovan, was elected from the constituency.
However, after Elangovan’s subsequent demise, the seat fell vacant once again, leading to another by-poll. In the re-election, Chandrakumar of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) won the seat.
