Salem (North) Assembly Constituency

Salem North, Constituency no 89, is a dense urban–industrial constituency where elections are driven by labour sentiment, minority consolidation, civic service delivery, and welfare penetration. Unlike middle-class-driven Salem West, Salem North behaves like a worker-centric municipal election, making it highly volatile and turnout-sensitive.

Political & Social Character:

The electorate consists of:

  • Industrial and contract workers (textiles, steel-linked units, workshops)
  • Muslim communities (significant consolidation in pockets)
  • Scheduled Caste settlements in dense urban clusters
  • Urban poor and informal labour
  • Small traders and transport workers
  • Women SHG and welfare beneficiaries

Geography & Connectivity:

Northern urban core of Salem city
Dense habitation with limited open space
Strong road connectivity but high congestion
Proximity to industrial units and transport

Hotspots:

  • SAIL steel plant
  • Industrial-adjacent residential wards
  • Slum and labour colonies
  • Minority-dominated neighbourhoods
  • Market and transport zones
  • SC colonies
  • Each locality votes on immediate survival and service issues.

Core Issues:

  • Job security & wage stability
  • Drinking water supply
  • Drainage & flood management
  • Solid-waste and sanitation
  • Government hospital access
  • Housing and slum services
  • Welfare scheme delays

Voter Mood

  • Workers: jobs, wages, price stability
  • Minority voters: dignity, welfare access, civic order
  • SC voters: scheme access & housing security
  • Women: water, ration, healthcare
  • Youth: jobs, skills, mobility
  • Salem North voters reward leaders who solve daily problems quickly.

Tamil Nadu CM Floor Test Highlights: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay comfortably won the floor test on Wednesday, securing support from 144 MLAs after the DMK staged a walkout, bringing down the effective majority mark to 88 from 117. While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
