Hansan Assembly Constituency

Hansan, a general category Assembly constituency in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, is one of the seven segments under the Birbhum Lok Sabha seat. It was established in 1962 and comprises the Rampurhat II and Nalhati II community development blocks.

Of the 14 Assembly elections held here so far, the Congress party has won eight times, followed by four victories by the Revolutionary Communist Party of India. The All India Forward Bloc and the Trinamool Congress have each won the seat once. Congress dominated Hansan for two decades, winning five consecutive terms between 1996 and 2016. In 2011, Congress’s Asit Kumar Mal defeated RCPI’s Kamal Hasan by 26,452 votes. Trinamool tried to ride on Mal’s past success by fielding him in 2016, but the move backfired as Congress’s Milton Rashid defeated him by 16,154 votes. Rashid remains the only Muslim MLA ever elected from this Muslim-majority seat. Trinamool finally broke through in 2021 when its nominee Ashok Kumar Chattopadhyay defeated BJP’s Nikhil Banerjee by a margin of 50,613 votes.

The BJP’s rise in Hansan has been slow but noticeable. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, it finished second behind Trinamool in the Hansan Assembly segment by 29,910 votes. That gap widened to 38,958 votes in the 2024 parliamentary polls, suggesting a steady consolidation of its vote base.

Hansan had 259,674 registered voters in 2024, up from 248,113 in 2021 and 235,934 in 2019. In 2021, Muslims made up 54.50 per cent of the electorate, while Scheduled Castes accounted for 27.49 per cent. The constituency is overwhelmingly rural, with only 2.57 per cent of voters residing in urban areas. Voter turnout has consistently remained robust, with 81.18 per cent in 2024, 85.11 per cent in 2021, 84.52 per cent in 2019 and 84.44 per cent in 2016.

Hansan lies in the north-central part of Birbhum district, nestled within the fertile plains of the Mayurakshi River basin. The terrain is largely flat with gentle undulations, and the soil is well-suited for agriculture. Small rivers like the Brahmani and Bansloi flow through the region, supporting irrigation and contributing to the agrarian economy. Paddy, mustard and vegetables are the primary crops, while brick kilns, rice mills and local handicrafts offer supplementary income. Weekly markets and small trading hubs serve as economic lifelines for surrounding villages.

Infrastructure is functional but uneven. Roads connecting Hansan to Rampurhat, Nalhati and Suri are motorable, though some stretches deteriorate during the monsoon. Electricity coverage is widespread, and mobile connectivity is stable. Water supply is largely dependent on hand pumps and tubewells, with piped water available in select pockets. Healthcare needs are met by rural health centres and sub-divisional hospitals in Rampurhat and Nalhati.

Hansan is located about 28 km from Rampurhat, the subdivision headquarters, and 41 km from Nalhati. The district headquarters at Suri lies just 10 km to the south, while Sainthia is 10 km east. Other nearby towns include Dubrajpur at 44 km, Bolpur at 65 km and Murarai at 52 km. Dumka in Jharkhand is 47 km west, Pakur is 75 km north, and Rajmahal is 119 km away. Murshidabad town lies 72 km northeast, and Berhampore is 68 km away. Across the border, Nawabganj in Bangladesh is about 95 km northeast, and Chapai Nababganj is roughly 101 km. Kolkata, the state capital, is approximately 220 km south.

Given the strong performance of the Trinamool Congress in recent elections and its commanding margins, it enters the 2026 Assembly elections as the clear frontrunner in Hansan. The BJP continues to expand its footprint but remains in catch-up mode. Meanwhile, the Congress–Left Front alliance, though not dominant, is far from irrelevant, having finished a close third in the last two elections. Any further resurgence of this alliance could dent Trinamool’s prospects, but an upset appears unlikely, if not impossible.

Bengal Post-Poll Updates: TMC appoints Kolkata Mayor as Chief Whip, Deputy LoPs also named

West Bengal witnessed a major political development on Saturday as Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as Chief Minister at a high-profile ceremony in Kolkata. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Union ministers, and Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states. During the ceremony, PM Modi was seen touching the feet of 98-year-old BJP veteran Makhanlal Sarkar, drawing attention from leaders present at the venue. In a key administrative move, retired IAS officer and former Election Commission special observer for SIR, Subrata Gupta, has been appointed as advisor to the new Chief Minister. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called upon the Left and other opposition parties to unite and form a "joint platform" against the BJP. In a parallel development, the Trinamool Congress appointed senior leader and 10-time MLA Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.

Video: Yogi Adityanath gifts saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari at his oath-taking

Yogi Adityanath on Saturday presented a saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari, shortly after the latter took oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal. The crowd also erupted into a loud cheer as the scene unfolded at the swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata. This was at least the second such instance in recent weeks when the duo's bonhomie was witnessed publicly. Earlier, during the election campaign in the state, a powerful scene was witnessed when Adhikari bowed down at the feet of the UP Chief Minister as a mark of respect.
