Jangipara Assembly Constituency

Jangipara, a general category Assembly constituency established in 1957, is located in West Bengal’s Hooghly district and is one of the seven segments under the Sreerampur Lok Sabha seat. It is predominantly rural in character, with only 8.20 per cent of its voters living in urban pockets. The constituency comprises the entire Jangipara community development block along with Ainya, Haripur, Masat and Shiyakhala gram panchayats of Chanditala I block.

Jangipara is part of the Sreerampur subdivision, the most urbanised in Hooghly district, though the Jangipara block itself remains largely rural. The constituency had 257,025 registered voters in 2021, up from 246,760 in 2019 and 234,350 in 2016. Scheduled Castes account for 29.39 per cent of the electorate, while Muslims make up 24.90 per cent. Voter turnout has consistently remained above 80 per cent, with 83.44 per cent in 2016, 80.46 per cent in 2019, and 81.87 per cent in 2021.

Jangipara has witnessed 16 Assembly elections since its inception. The Congress and the CPI(M) dominated the early decades, with the CPI(M) winning seven times and the Congress six. The tide turned in 2011 when the Trinamool Congress registered its first victory and has since remained undefeated. Snehasis Chakraborty, an incumbent minister in the state, has won the seat thrice in a row. In 2011, he defeated CPI(M)’s sitting MLA Prof. Sudarsan Roy Chowdhury by 13,076 votes. His margin increased to 23,605 votes in 2016 against CPI(M)’s Pobitra Singha Roy, but came down to 17,926 votes in 2021 when BJP’s Debjit Sarkar finished second. The Left Front-Congress alliance, backing SK Moinuddin of the Indian Secular Front, finished a distant third with just 8.44 per cent of the vote, compared to 48.43 per cent for the Trinamool Congress and 39.91 per cent for the BJP.

The BJP’s growing presence has also been reflected in the Lok Sabha elections. It trailed the Trinamool Congress in the Jangipara Assembly segment by 11,932 votes in 2019, and by 28,020 votes in 2024. The CPI(M) continued to slip, polling just 7.30 per cent in 2019 and 9.05 per cent in 2024.

Jangipara lies within the Hooghly-Damodar Plain, part of the Gangetic Delta. The terrain is flat and alluvial, with seasonal depressions that collect rainwater and drain through small channels. The area is well-suited for agriculture, with paddy, vegetables, and jute being the main crops. The economy is largely agrarian, supported by small-scale trading and local markets. The region also has a modest presence of cottage industries and handloom weaving.

The constituency is served by a network of rural roads and is connected to nearby towns such as Haripal, about 18 km away, and Chanditala, roughly 20 km to the east. The district headquarters at Chinsurah is located about 45 km away, while Kolkata, the state capital, lies approximately 50 km to the southeast. Jangipara shares borders with blocks from Howrah district, including Jagatballavpur and Udaynarayanpur, and with Tarakeswar and Pursurah blocks within Hooghly.

Historically, Rajbalhat in Jangipara block was the capital of the Bhurshut kingdom in the 16th century. Though the fort no longer exists, the Rajballavi temple from that era remains active. Furfura Sharif, a Muslim pilgrimage centre with roots dating back to the 14th century, is also located in the block. Antpur, another village in the constituency, is known for its temple architecture and its association with the early disciples of Ramakrishna.

As the 2026 Assembly elections approach, the Trinamool Congress enjoys a marginal edge, but the BJP is close behind and poised to challenge. The Left Front-Congress alliance, though weakened, could still play a decisive role. A revival of their vote share might hurt the Trinamool Congress and make the contest tighter. Jangipara is shaping up to be a constituency where no party can afford to be complacent.

Bengal Post-Poll Updates: TMC appoints Kolkata Mayor as Chief Whip, Deputy LoPs also named

West Bengal witnessed a major political development on Saturday as Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as Chief Minister at a high-profile ceremony in Kolkata. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Union ministers, and Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states. During the ceremony, PM Modi was seen touching the feet of 98-year-old BJP veteran Makhanlal Sarkar, drawing attention from leaders present at the venue. In a key administrative move, retired IAS officer and former Election Commission special observer for SIR, Subrata Gupta, has been appointed as advisor to the new Chief Minister. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called upon the Left and other opposition parties to unite and form a "joint platform" against the BJP. In a parallel development, the Trinamool Congress appointed senior leader and 10-time MLA Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.

Video: Yogi Adityanath gifts saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari at his oath-taking

Yogi Adityanath on Saturday presented a saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari, shortly after the latter took oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal. The crowd also erupted into a loud cheer as the scene unfolded at the swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata. This was at least the second such instance in recent weeks when the duo's bonhomie was witnessed publicly. Earlier, during the election campaign in the state, a powerful scene was witnessed when Adhikari bowed down at the feet of the UP Chief Minister as a mark of respect.
