Memari Assembly Constituency

Memari, a general category Assembly constituency in West Bengal’s Purba Bardhaman district, has been part of the state’s electoral map since 1962. It is one of the seven segments under the Bardhaman Purba Lok Sabha seat. The constituency comprises Memari municipality, the Memari I community development block, and two gram panchayats – Kuchut and Satgachhia II – from Memari II block. With a predominantly rural character, Memari has long been a stronghold of the Left parties, though the political winds have shifted in recent years.

Over the course of 15 Assembly elections, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and its parent party, the Communist Party of India, have together won the seat 10 times. The Congress party interrupted this dominance with victories in 1967 and 1972. However, the emergence of the Trinamool Congress in 2011 marked a decisive break from the Left’s grip. Since then, Trinamool has won three consecutive terms, each time fielding a different candidate. The strategy of changing candidates has helped Trinamool Congress consolidate its foothold. Abul Hasem Mondal won in 2011 by a narrow margin of 3,178 votes over CPI(M)’s Debashis Ghosh. In 2016, Begum Nargis increased the margin to 8,883 votes. The 2021 election saw Madhusudan Bhattacharya win with a commanding lead of 23,078 votes, as the BJP replaced CPI(M) as the principal challenger. CPI(M)’s vote share plummeted to 11.71 per cent, while Trinamool and BJP secured 47.93 and 37.38 per cent, respectively.

This shift was mirrored in the Lok Sabha elections. Trinamool’s lead in the Memari Assembly segment was a modest 5,008 votes in 2014 and 4,899 votes in 2019, but surged to 32,831 votes in the 2024 parliamentary polls, with the BJP firmly establishing itself as the main opposition.

Memari had 254,236 registered voters in 2021, rising slightly to 257,375 in 2024. Scheduled Castes account for 32.73 per cent of the electorate, Scheduled Tribes 14.80 per cent, and Muslims 20.40 per cent. The constituency is overwhelmingly rural, with 84.77 per cent of voters residing in villages and only 15.23 per cent in urban areas. Voter turnout has consistently remained high with 87.37 per cent in 2016, 84.72 per cent in 2019, 86.10 per cent in 2021 and 83.32 per cent in 2024.

Geographically, Memari lies in the Bardhaman Sadar South subdivision and is part of the fertile alluvial plains of central Bengal. The terrain is flat and well-suited for agriculture, with the Damodar and Dwarakeswar rivers flowing nearby. These rivers enrich the soil and support irrigation, making the region one of Bengal’s key agricultural belts. Paddy, potatoes, and seasonal vegetables are the main crops, while jute cultivation also contributes to the local economy.

Memari’s economy is largely agrarian, though small-scale trading and service-based occupations are common. The town has a modest industrial presence, with rice mills and agro-processing units dotting the region. The infrastructure is reasonably developed, with Memari railway station situated on the Howrah–Bardhaman main line, approximately 82 km from Howrah. State highways 13 and 15 pass through the town, ensuring connectivity to nearby urban centres.

Memari is located approximately 25 km from Bardhaman, the district headquarters, and about 100 km from Kolkata, the state capital. Nearby towns include Jamalpur (20 km), Khandaghosh (15 km), and Shyamsundar (18 km). The constituency shares proximity with the Hooghly district to the south and the Bankura district to the west. Durgapur in Paschim Bardhaman lies about 65 km away, while Krishnanagar in Nadia district is roughly 90 km to the east.

As the 2026 Assembly elections approach, the Trinamool Congress enjoys a clear edge in Memari, buoyed by its rising popularity and widening victory margins. However, this advantage could be challenged if the BJP manages to craft a compelling anti-incumbency narrative and the CPI(M) stages a significant revival. In such a scenario, the electoral contest could become more competitive, though for now, Trinamool appears to be comfortably placed.

Bengal Post-Poll Updates: TMC appoints Kolkata Mayor as Chief Whip, Deputy LoPs also named

West Bengal witnessed a major political development on Saturday as Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as Chief Minister at a high-profile ceremony in Kolkata. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Union ministers, and Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states. During the ceremony, PM Modi was seen touching the feet of 98-year-old BJP veteran Makhanlal Sarkar, drawing attention from leaders present at the venue. In a key administrative move, retired IAS officer and former Election Commission special observer for SIR, Subrata Gupta, has been appointed as advisor to the new Chief Minister. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called upon the Left and other opposition parties to unite and form a "joint platform" against the BJP. In a parallel development, the Trinamool Congress appointed senior leader and 10-time MLA Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.

Video: Yogi Adityanath gifts saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari at his oath-taking

Yogi Adityanath on Saturday presented a saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari, shortly after the latter took oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal. The crowd also erupted into a loud cheer as the scene unfolded at the swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata. This was at least the second such instance in recent weeks when the duo's bonhomie was witnessed publicly. Earlier, during the election campaign in the state, a powerful scene was witnessed when Adhikari bowed down at the feet of the UP Chief Minister as a mark of respect.
