Andipatti Assembly Constituency

Andipatti (Constituency no 198), located in the western part of Theni district, is a politically significant and socially layered constituency rooted in agriculture, small-town commerce, and rural networks. Nestled between the Western Ghats and the Vaigai river basin, Andipatti reflects a landscape shaped by irrigation dependence, agrarian livelihoods, and migration-driven economic change. The constituency combines agrarian villages, market towns, and hill-adjacent settlements, making it a rural seat with evolving aspirations.

Traditionally known for farming, cattle rearing, and agro-based trade, Andipatti has seen gradual socio-economic transition over the last decade. While welfare schemes have improved basic security, structural challenges related to water availability, employment diversification, and infrastructure gaps continue to shape political discourse.

Political & Social Character

M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) won the Andipatti assembly seat in the 1984 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election. He contested and won the seat despite being in the United States for medical treatment at the time. This was the second time MGR won from a hospital bed, the earlier occasion being in 1967, after he was shot by fellow actor M. R. Radha.

Jayalalithaa’s strong political connect with Andipatti was pivotal to her comeback, as she won the 2002 by-election after her 2001 disqualification and again secured victory from the same constituency in 2006.

Politically, Andipatti is defined by grassroots mobilisation, caste-based social networks, and personality-driven local leadership. Electoral outcomes are rarely wave-driven; instead, they depend on booth-level influence, welfare delivery perception, and candidate accessibility.

Farmers, agricultural labourers, small traders, welfare beneficiaries, and migrant families form the core voter base. Caste equations play a decisive role in rural pockets, while younger voters increasingly assess governance performance, job prospects, and education access.

While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
