Virudhunagar, Constituency no 206, is centered around the historic trading town of Virudhunagar, one of the most commercially active towns in southern Tamil Nadu. The town has long been associated with trading networks, match and fireworks industries, and small-scale manufacturing. It is also politically significant as the birthplace of former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj, one of the most influential leaders in Tamil Nadu’s political history.
In one of the most significant setbacks in TN's political history, a confidant Kamaraj lost this home-seat to DMK's P. Srinivasan, a student leader, in the 1967 polls that heralded the advent of the first post-Independence Dravidian party rule in the State under C. N. Annadurai. Since then no national party has ruled here.
