Tiruchendur Assembly Constituency

Tiruchendur (Constituency No. 215), located in southern Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district along the Gulf of Mannar, is a coastal, semi-urban assembly constituency. It is renowned for the historic Tiruchendur Murugan Temple, a major pilgrimage centre attracting devotees from across the state. The region blends coastal fishing villages, agrarian hinterlands, and small-town commercial hubs, with an economy driven by agriculture, fisheries, livestock, and trade, besides the temple precincts.
DMK’s Anitha Radhakrishnan has represented the constituency since 2006; originally from the AIADMK, he shifted to the DMK in 2009 and has continued to win since.

Geography & Connectivity

Tiruchendur comprises coastal settlements, tank-irrigated agricultural belts, and dryland farming areas. Paddy, millets, pulses, livestock rearing, and fishing shape livelihoods. Seasonal water availability and tank maintenance are crucial for agriculture, while coastal communities depend heavily on marine resources.
Road connectivity links Tiruchendur with Thoothukudi, Vilathikulam, and Sathankulam, but interior routes are weak. Public transport remains irregular, affecting students, women, and the elderly.

While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
