Srivilliputhur Assembly Constituency

Srivilliputhur (Constituency no 203), in Virudhunagar district, is a culturally significant and socially diverse constituency anchored by the iconic Srivilliputhur Andal Temple, its gopuram facade, featured on the Tamil Nadu state emblem. The area blends deep religious heritage with a semi-urban economy driven by textiles, handlooms, dairy, and small-scale trade. Situated between the Western Ghats foothills and the southern dry plains, it bridges agrarian interiors and growing town economies.

Also palkova, a sweet made here, is world famous. It is a household industry.

Political & Social Character

The electorate comprises traditional trading communities, weavers, agricultural labourers, government employees, and an emerging lower-middle class.

Geography & Connectivity

Lying between forested foothills and dry farms, the constituency depends on seasonal streams and tanks for limited agriculture. Srivilliputhur town is a service hub connected by state highways to Rajapalayam, Sivakasi, and Madurai. Rail services need better frequency, while interior roads and drainage infrastructure require upgrades.

Core Issues

  • Limited youth employment and skill diversification
  • Stress in the handloom sector
  • Poor drainage and sanitation
  • Traffic congestion near temple/market zones
  • Drinking water shortages in summer
  • Weak healthcare access and referrals
  • Aging village roads and transport gaps

Voter Mood

Weaver communities seek income stability and support; traders demand better traffic and market infrastructure; youth want jobs and training; women prioritise water, sanitation, and healthcare; seniors want improved transport and hospitals. Voter behaviour favours leadership credibility, accessibility, and local performance over ideological waves. Religious institutions, cooperatives, and business networks influence public opinion, with booth-level swings often determining tight results.

While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
