Bangaon Uttar Assembly Constituency

Bangaon Uttar, a Scheduled Caste reserved Assembly constituency in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, is one of the seven segments under the Bangaon Lok Sabha seat. Created in 2011 following the recommendations of the Delimitation Commission, it was carved out of the erstwhile Bangaon Assembly seat, which had existed since 1951. The bifurcation led to the formation of Bangaon Uttar and Bangaon Dakshin, with Bangaon Uttar comprising the entire Bangaon municipality and seven gram panchayats of the Bangaon community development block.

Since its inception, Bangaon Uttar has seen three Assembly elections. Biswajit Das of the Trinamool Congress emerged victorious in 2011 and 2016, defeating CPI(M)’s Biswajit Kumar Biswas by 23,620 votes in the first outing and Forward Bloc’s Sushanta Bowali by a larger margin of 33,192 votes in the second. Das’s defection to the BJP in 2019 gave the saffron party its first serious foothold in the region. Though he returned to the Trinamool fold in 2021 and contested from Bagdah, the BJP made the most of the opening and won Bangaon Uttar with Ashok Kirtania defeating Trinamool’s Shayamal Roy by 10,488 votes.

The BJP’s ascendancy in Bangaon Uttar was first signalled in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, where it led the segment by 28,370 votes over the Trinamool Congress. The lead was sustained in 2024, albeit with a slight dip to 25,030 votes, indicating a consolidation of support rather than a flash in the pan.

The constituency had 251,387 registered voters in 2021, up from 240,392 in 2019. Scheduled Castes form a significant chunk of the electorate at 39.41 per cent, while Muslims account for 13.90 per cent. The voter base is mixed, with 62.70 per cent residing in rural areas and 37.30 per cent in urban pockets. Voter turnout has consistently been high, with 81.86 per cent in 2021, 81.40 per cent in 2019 and 82.80 per cent in 2016.

Bangaon has a history tied to migration and displacement. After Partition, the area became a major settlement zone for refugees from East Pakistan, now Bangladesh. The Matua community, with a strong presence in the region, continues to influence the political mood of the area.

The terrain is flat and fertile, typical of southern Bengal. The Ichamati River flows nearby and plays a vital role in irrigation. Agriculture is the mainstay for most families, with paddy, jute and vegetables being the common crops. There are few industries in the area, and employment opportunities are limited. Many young people migrate to cities like Kolkata or even further for work. Small businesses and local markets do exist, but they are not enough to support the growing population.

Bangaon town is the nearest urban centre and serves as the constituency’s administrative and commercial hub. It is located about 75 km from Kolkata, the state capital, and roughly 60 km from Barasat, the district headquarters. Other nearby towns include Habra (35 km), Gaighata (20 km), and Bagdah (30 km). The constituency shares borders with the Nadia district to the north, with Ranaghat located about 40 km away and Krishnanagar around 65 km from Bangaon. The Bangladesh border lies just 10 km away via Petrapole, which serves as one of the busiest land ports between India and Bangladesh.

As the 2026 Assembly elections draw near, the BJP appears to have the upper hand, buoyed by its consistent leads in the last two Lok Sabha polls and the 2021 Assembly election. The Trinamool Congress, despite its long-standing presence, may face headwinds from both anti-incumbency and a possible CPI(M) revival. If the Left manages to claw back even a fraction of its old vote share, it could split the anti-BJP vote and further complicate Trinamool’s prospects. Add to that the region’s slow pace of development under the Trinamool regime, and the battle for Bangaon Uttar promises to be anything but comfortable for the state’s ruling party.

Bengal Post-Poll Updates: TMC appoints Kolkata Mayor as Chief Whip, Deputy LoPs also named

West Bengal witnessed a major political development on Saturday as Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as Chief Minister at a high-profile ceremony in Kolkata. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Union ministers, and Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states. During the ceremony, PM Modi was seen touching the feet of 98-year-old BJP veteran Makhanlal Sarkar, drawing attention from leaders present at the venue. In a key administrative move, retired IAS officer and former Election Commission special observer for SIR, Subrata Gupta, has been appointed as advisor to the new Chief Minister. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called upon the Left and other opposition parties to unite and form a "joint platform" against the BJP. In a parallel development, the Trinamool Congress appointed senior leader and 10-time MLA Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.

Video: Yogi Adityanath gifts saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari at his oath-taking

Yogi Adityanath on Saturday presented a saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari, shortly after the latter took oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal. The crowd also erupted into a loud cheer as the scene unfolded at the swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata. This was at least the second such instance in recent weeks when the duo's bonhomie was witnessed publicly. Earlier, during the election campaign in the state, a powerful scene was witnessed when Adhikari bowed down at the feet of the UP Chief Minister as a mark of respect.
