Baruipur Paschim Assembly Constituency

Baruipur Paschim, a general category Assembly constituency, is situated in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal and falls under the Jadavpur Lok Sabha seat. The constituency came into existence in its present form following the 2008 Delimitation Commission’s recommendations, which split the original Baruipur seat into Baruipur Paschim and Baruipur Purba. The Paschim segment includes the entire Baruipur municipality and 10 gram panchayats from the Baruipur community development block.

Since its creation, Baruipur Paschim has remained a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress, with senior leader and Speaker of the State Assembly, Biman Banerjee, winning all three elections held so far. In 2011, Banerjee defeated CPI(M)’s Kanak Kant Paria by 31,888 votes. His margin increased to 36,532 votes in 2016 against CPI(M)’s Saifuddin Khan, and further surged to 61,910 votes in 2021 when he defeated BJP’s Debopam Chattopadhyay. The BJP, which had polled just 4,191 votes in 2011, steadily improved its performance, securing 13,812 votes in 2016 and jumping to 59,096 votes in 2021. This rise is notable given that nearly one-third of the constituency’s voters are Muslims, who typically do not support the BJP due to its ideological leanings. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Trinamool Congress maintained its lead in the Baruipur Paschim segment, ahead of the BJP by 40,248 votes, slightly up from its 35,032-vote lead in 2019.

Baruipur Paschim constituency had 253,749 registered voters in the 2021 Assembly elections, up from 232,743 in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and 212,898 voters in the 2016 Assembly elections. Muslim and Scheduled Caste voters were almost equal, with Muslims accounting for 30.30 per cent (76,872 voters) and Scheduled Castes making up 30.28 per cent (76,819 voters). The constituency has a mixed character with 51.60 per cent rural and 48.40 per cent urban voters. The constituency witnesses a high voter turnout in excess of 80 per cent. It recorded a turnout of 83.29 per cent in 2021, marginally better than the 82.16 per cent turnout of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls but lower than the 85.77 per cent recorded in the 2016 Assembly polls.

Baruipur has a rich historical legacy, once serving as a key stop on the old Calcutta–East Bengal railway line. The town, which is part of the Baruipur Paschim seat, was known for its indigo plantations during the colonial era and has long been a centre for local trade and agriculture. The terrain is largely flat and low-lying, typical of the Ganges delta region. It is crisscrossed by small rivers and canals, including the Adi Ganga, which once served as a navigable route to Kolkata.

Farming remains a significant part of the local economy, with paddy, vegetables, and flowers being the main crops. However, urbanisation has steadily encroached upon agricultural land, especially in areas close to the municipality. Employment is largely informal, with many residents engaged in small businesses, construction, and services. A sizable section of the population also commutes to Kolkata for work, thanks to the Baruipur railway station, which connects the town to Sealdah via the suburban rail network.

Baruipur is located about 25 kilometres south of Kolkata, the state capital, and roughly 30 kilometres from Alipore, the district headquarters of South 24 Parganas. Nearby towns include Sonarpur (12 km), Rajpur (10 km), and Bhangar (20 km).

Despite the BJP’s steady rise in Baruipur Paschim, the Trinamool Congress continues to enjoy a clear advantage. For the BJP to mount a serious challenge, it would need to make inroads into the minority vote bank and consolidate support among the Scheduled Castes and urban voters. A potential upset could only materialise if the Left Front-Congress alliance regains its lost ground and reclaims the vote share that has steadily shifted to the Trinamool Congress over the past decade and a half.

Bengal Post-Poll Updates: TMC appoints Kolkata Mayor as Chief Whip, Deputy LoPs also named

West Bengal witnessed a major political development on Saturday as Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as Chief Minister at a high-profile ceremony in Kolkata. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Union ministers, and Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states. During the ceremony, PM Modi was seen touching the feet of 98-year-old BJP veteran Makhanlal Sarkar, drawing attention from leaders present at the venue. In a key administrative move, retired IAS officer and former Election Commission special observer for SIR, Subrata Gupta, has been appointed as advisor to the new Chief Minister. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called upon the Left and other opposition parties to unite and form a "joint platform" against the BJP. In a parallel development, the Trinamool Congress appointed senior leader and 10-time MLA Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.

Video: Yogi Adityanath gifts saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari at his oath-taking

Yogi Adityanath on Saturday presented a saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari, shortly after the latter took oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal. The crowd also erupted into a loud cheer as the scene unfolded at the swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata. This was at least the second such instance in recent weeks when the duo's bonhomie was witnessed publicly. Earlier, during the election campaign in the state, a powerful scene was witnessed when Adhikari bowed down at the feet of the UP Chief Minister as a mark of respect.
