Satgachhia Assembly Constituency

Satgachhia, a general category Assembly constituency located in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, is one of the seven segments under the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha seat. Though Satgachhia itself is a modest village in the Alipore Sadar subdivision, its name has long echoed in Bengal’s political corridors thanks to its association with the late Jyoti Basu, the state’s longest-serving chief minister. Basu, a towering figure among Indian communists, shifted to Satgachhia after his defeat in Baranagar in 1972, a seat he had represented since 1952 across six terms. From 1977, the year Satgachhia was granted Assembly status, Basu won five terms from this seat until his retirement in 2000, turning the sleepy village into a VIP constituency.

Basu’s exit from active politics opened the floodgates for the newly established Trinamool Congress. Sonali Guha, a close aide of Mamata Banerjee, won four terms between 2001 and 2016. In 2021, Trinamool denied her a ticket and fielded Mohan Chandra Naskar instead. Guha switched sides to the BJP and helped the party leapfrog from the margins to the main stage. Naskar won the seat by 23,318 votes over BJP’s Chandan Pal. But the real story lay beneath the surface. BJP led in 54.80 per cent of the polling booths, while Trinamool managed leads in only 45.20 per cent of booths.

Trinamool’s dominance in the Satgachhia Assembly segment during Lok Sabha elections has been more emphatic, with leads of 24,779 votes in 2019 and 60,618 votes in 2024 over the BJP. Yet, these numbers are shaded by the fact that Abhishek Banerjee, Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and heir apparent, contests from Diamond Harbour, giving the segment a high-profile sheen that may not reflect its ground realities.

Satgachhia Assembly constituency is composed of the entire Bishnupur II community development block and the Burul, Chakmanik, Gaja Poyali, Kamrabad, Naskarpur, Rania and Satgachhia gram panchayats of Budge Budge II community development block.

Satgachhia had 270,193 registered voters in 2021, up from 258,591 in 2019. Muslims form 33.60 per cent of the electorate, while Scheduled Castes account for 16.29 per cent. The constituency is predominantly rural, with 74.10 per cent of voters residing in villages and 25.90 per cent in urban pockets. Voter turnout has remained robust with 85.41 per cent in 2016, 85.17 per cent in 2019, and 87.22 per cent in 2021.

Satgachhia lies in the low-lying deltaic plains of South Bengal, influenced by the Hooghly River and its distributaries. The terrain is flat and prone to waterlogging during the monsoon. Agriculture remains the backbone of the local economy, with paddy, vegetables and betel leaf cultivation being common. Despite its VIP status, Satgachhia’s infrastructure remains modest. Roads are narrow and often poorly maintained. Public transport is limited. Healthcare facilities are basic. Higher education institutions are few and far between. Jyoti Basu’s long tenure as chief minister did little to transform the constituency’s economy or infrastructure, a fact that continues to puzzle many observers.

Satgachhia is located about 28 km from Alipore, the district headquarters, and roughly 35 km from Kolkata, the state capital. Nearby towns include Budge Budge at 12 km, Diamond Harbour at 30 km, and Baruipur at 25 km. The constituency shares borders with the Howrah district to the west and East Midnapore to the south. Uluberia in Howrah is about 40 km away, while Tamluk in East Midnapore lies roughly 65 km from Satgachhia.

As the 2026 Assembly elections approach, Trinamool Congress cannot afford to rest on its laurels. The BJP’s booth-level dominance in recent elections signals a shifting tide. If the party decides to field Sonali Guha from her old bastion, it could spell trouble for Trinamool. Add to that the possibility of a CPI(M) revival. The party had polled 39.71 per cent in 2016 before crashing to 6.89 per cent in 2021. The CPI(M)’s revival may turn the contest more unpredictable. Satgachhia is bracing for a close and intriguing battle where no outcome can be taken for granted.

Bengal Post-Poll Updates: TMC appoints Kolkata Mayor as Chief Whip, Deputy LoPs also named

West Bengal witnessed a major political development on Saturday as Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as Chief Minister at a high-profile ceremony in Kolkata. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Union ministers, and Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states. During the ceremony, PM Modi was seen touching the feet of 98-year-old BJP veteran Makhanlal Sarkar, drawing attention from leaders present at the venue. In a key administrative move, retired IAS officer and former Election Commission special observer for SIR, Subrata Gupta, has been appointed as advisor to the new Chief Minister. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called upon the Left and other opposition parties to unite and form a "joint platform" against the BJP. In a parallel development, the Trinamool Congress appointed senior leader and 10-time MLA Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.

Video: Yogi Adityanath gifts saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari at his oath-taking

Yogi Adityanath on Saturday presented a saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari, shortly after the latter took oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal. The crowd also erupted into a loud cheer as the scene unfolded at the swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata. This was at least the second such instance in recent weeks when the duo's bonhomie was witnessed publicly. Earlier, during the election campaign in the state, a powerful scene was witnessed when Adhikari bowed down at the feet of the UP Chief Minister as a mark of respect.
