Panchla Assembly Constituency

Panchala Assembly constituency is situated in the Howrah district of West Bengal. It falls under the Howrah Lok Sabha seat and comprises the Panchala community development block along with four gram panchayats from Jagatballavpur block. It is a general category seat and has historically seen multi-cornered contests. However, the battle has largely been between the Forward Bloc, Congress, and, more recently, the Trinamool Congress and BJP.

Established in 1962, Panchala has witnessed 15 elections to date, with Apurba Lal Mazumdar of the Forward Bloc winning the inaugural contest. Over the decades, the Forward Bloc maintained a strong presence, with leaders like Sailen Mondal and Santosh Kumar Das securing multiple victories. The Forward Bloc won the seat seven times, while the Congress party registered victories here on four occasions. The Trinamool Congress has won the seat thrice consecutively since 2011, while the Communist Party of India registered its lone triumph in 1971.

Gulsan Mullick, a prominent figure, first won the seat in 1996 as a Congress candidate and later switched to the Trinamool Congress, winning again in 2011, 2016, and 2021. In the 2021 Assembly elections, Mullick defeated the BJP’s Mohit Lal Ghanti by a margin of 32,751 votes. During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the TMC led in the Panchala segment by 56,658 votes with a vote share of 57.85 percent, followed by the BJP at 31.21 percent.

In terms of voter demographics, Panchala had 235,296 registered voters during the 2016 Assembly elections, which rose to 250,535 by the 2019 parliamentary polls. By the time of the 2021 Assembly elections, the number had climbed to 266,183. Muslims form a significant portion of the electorate, accounting for approximately 38.9 percent, while Scheduled Caste voters make up 18.51 percent of the electorate. The constituency is predominantly urban, with a mix of rural pockets. Urban voters accounted for 66.43 percent of the electorate, while rural voters made up the remaining 33.57 percent. Voter turnout has consistently been robust, standing at 81.15 percent in 2016, 77.41 percent in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, and 79.89 percent in 2021.

The region has seen gradual socio-economic changes over the years. The terrain is largely flat and fertile, supporting agriculture as a primary occupation. Paddy, vegetables, and jute are commonly grown crops. Industrial activity is limited, with small-scale units scattered across the constituency. Employment is primarily agrarian, with many residents seeking work in nearby urban centres. The lack of large industries has kept the local economy modest, though proximity to Howrah and Kolkata offers some spillover benefits.

Panchala is located approximately 25 km from Kolkata, the state capital. It is well-connected by road and rail, with Howrah city just 15 km away. Other nearby towns include Domjur (10 km), Uluberia (20 km), and Bagnan (30 km).

With the Trinamool Congress consolidating its hold and the BJP making steady inroads, Panchala is poised for a keenly watched contest in 2026. The Forward Bloc, once a dominant force, has faded into the background, and the Congress remains a marginal player. The outcome will likely hinge on voter mobilisation and the ability of parties to address local aspirations. Issues such as employment, infrastructure, and industrial development are likely to influence voter sentiment in the run-up to the 2026 polls.

Bengal Post-Poll Updates: TMC appoints Kolkata Mayor as Chief Whip, Deputy LoPs also named

West Bengal witnessed a major political development on Saturday as Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as Chief Minister at a high-profile ceremony in Kolkata. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Union ministers, and Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states. During the ceremony, PM Modi was seen touching the feet of 98-year-old BJP veteran Makhanlal Sarkar, drawing attention from leaders present at the venue. In a key administrative move, retired IAS officer and former Election Commission special observer for SIR, Subrata Gupta, has been appointed as advisor to the new Chief Minister. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called upon the Left and other opposition parties to unite and form a "joint platform" against the BJP. In a parallel development, the Trinamool Congress appointed senior leader and 10-time MLA Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.

Video: Yogi Adityanath gifts saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari at his oath-taking

Yogi Adityanath on Saturday presented a saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari, shortly after the latter took oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal. The crowd also erupted into a loud cheer as the scene unfolded at the swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata. This was at least the second such instance in recent weeks when the duo's bonhomie was witnessed publicly. Earlier, during the election campaign in the state, a powerful scene was witnessed when Adhikari bowed down at the feet of the UP Chief Minister as a mark of respect.
