In a stern response to the ongoing stray dog crisis, the Supreme Court on Monday summoned the Chief Secretaries of all States and Union Territories, except West Bengal and Telangana, for failing to submit compliance affidavits detailing measures taken to enforce the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules.
Chief Justice of India BR Gavai has recommended Justice Surya Kant, the senior-most judge after him, as his successor to the Centre. Justice Gavai’s term ends on November 23. Upon approval by the Law Ministry, Justice Surya Kant will become the 53rd CJI, serving until February 9, 2027, a tenure of around 14 months, in line with the seniority convention.
