Dimoria Assembly Constituency

Dimoria is a Scheduled Caste-reserved Assembly constituency in Kamrup Metropolitan district of Assam and one of the 10 segments of the Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency. Created in 2023 following the recommendations of the Delimitation Commission to redistribute voters more evenly across Assam’s 126 Assembly seats, the constituency was carved out by reorganising parts of the earlier Dispur and Guwahati East seats.

Dimoria covers the central and eastern parts of the Guwahati urban sprawl, including residential colonies, commercial pockets, and some surrounding villages. It has a predominantly urban character with notable rural components, reflecting the high-density suburbs of the state capital.

Being a new constituency, Dimoria has no Assembly electoral history and will vote for the first time in its present form in the 2026 Assembly elections. It did, however, participate in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where the trend strongly favoured the BJP. The BJP led the Congress party by a huge margin of 56,487 votes in the Dimoria segment. Bijuli Kalita Medhi of the BJP polled 108,983 votes compared to 52,496 votes received by Mira Borthakur Goswami of Congress.

Dimoria had 218,158 eligible voters on its final roll for the 2026 Assembly elections, witnessing a slight decrease from 218,241 registered voters in 2024. Voter turnout was moderate at 67.93 per cent in 2024.

Demographics, based on available data largely from the 2011 Census, with proportions adjusted for area and delimitation changes, indicate a notable Muslim presence alongside a Hindu majority, Scheduled Castes (as this is an SC-reserved seat), and smaller Scheduled Tribes. The constituency features a mix of Assamese and Bengali-speaking communities along with urban and semi-urban groups, contributing to its mixed character.

The Dimoria constituency covers parts of the Kamrup Metropolitan district in the Brahmaputra Valley with flat alluvial plains and gentle undulations. The terrain supports small trade, services, and some horticulture, but is prone to seasonal flooding in low-lying areas. Livelihoods in Dimoria depend mainly on government services, trade, small businesses, and emerging sectors like IT and education. Infrastructure includes excellent road connectivity via National Highway 27, rail access is at Guwahati Railway Station, within the broader urban area, and basic amenities with ongoing developments in urban roads and drainage.

Nearby areas within the city include Dispur, about 5-8 km to the south-east, Beltola, about 4-6 km south, and Chandmari, about 3-5 km north-west. Key nearby towns and villages outside the immediate urban core include Sonapur, a census town located approximately 12-15 km to the east, and the Khetri village area, situated about 20-25 km east.

The BJP’s ally, Bodoland People’s Party (BPF), has fielded Tapan Das as its candidate, while the Congress party has Kishor Kumar Baruah as its nominee. Additionally, there are three Independents in the fray as well, Kaberi Das Teran, Nitul Das and Bhaskar Jyoti Pathak, ensuring it becomes a multi-cornered election at least on paper. The BPF, with full support of the BJP and AGP, is the firm favourite to win the Dimoria constituency in the 2026 Assembly elections.

How Himanta demolished Congress's 3G in Assam

The Congress's three-Gogoi alliance of Ahom leaders failed to turn Upper Assam away from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Often referred to as Chanakya of the Northeast, Sarma used a pincer attack of development and consolidation to boost BJP's tally and return to power in Assam.
