Morigaon Assembly Constituency

Morigaon is a town and the administrative headquarters of the Morigaon district in Assam. It has a layered history and is famous for the ancient occult village of Mayong and the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary. Established in 1972, Morigaon is a general (unreserved) Assembly constituency and one of the eight segments of the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat. Morigaon consists of the town area and a cluster of surrounding villages, giving it a semi-urban to predominantly rural outlook, dominated by agrarian communities, small traders, and mixed ethnic groups typical of central Assam's Brahmaputra Valley plains.

Morigaon constituency has voted in 11 Assembly elections since its inception. The Congress party has won the seat four times, Independent leaders thrice, while the CPI and the BJP have held the seat twice each.

Jonjonali Baruah of the Congress party won his third consecutive election in 2011, defeating Bireswar Medhi of the AGP by 27,721 votes, while the BJP finished a distant fourth. Jonjonali Baruah’s winning run came to a halt in 2016, as the BJP surged ahead with its candidate Rama Kanta Dewari, defeating Baruah by 29,623 votes. Dewari retained the seat for the BJP in 2021, as he prevailed over Bani Kanta Das of the Assam Jatiya Parishad, an ally of the Congress party, by an increased margin of 36,532 votes.

The familiar trend of the Congress party leading initially before bowing out to the BJP was played out in the Morigaon Assembly segment in the Lok Sabha elections as well. In 2009, the Congress led the BJP by a small margin of 9,787 votes. The lead flipped in 2014 as the BJP surged to the lead and has not looked back since. It led the Congress party by 9,365 votes in 2014, 28,361 votes in 2019 and 59,342 votes in 2024.

Morigaon constituency has largely remained unaffected by the SIR 2025 and the 2023 delimitation, as its voter base has increased steadily over the years. It had 206,019 eligible voters on its final roll for the 2026 Assembly elections, witnessing an addition of 2,833 voters from 203,186 in 2024. Following the 2023 delimitation, an additional 10,967 voters were added to its roll from 192,219 voters from 2021. Earlier, it stood at 184,020 in 2019, 165,874 in 2016, 155,159 in 2014 and 150,429 in 2011.

Before the 2023 delimitation, during which the voter demography changes with addition, removal and shifting of voters, Muslims formed the largest bloc with 26.60 per cent of the voters, while the Scheduled Tribes accounted for 24.30 per cent of its electors and the Scheduled Castes 11.72 per cent. Morigaon constituency was predominantly rural with 88.08 per cent of its voters based in the countryside, compared to 11.92 per cent of the electorate who lived in the Morigaon town limits. The voter turnout has remained high and satisfactory at 77.20 per cent in 2011, 79.94 per cent in 2014, 84.63 per cent in 2016, 80.85 per cent in 2019, 81.20 per cent in 2021 and 80.78 per cent in 2024.

The constituency features a mix of Assamese-speaking Hindus, Muslims, tea garden communities (Adivasis), and indigenous groups like Tiwa and Bodo, contributing to its diverse rural electorate.

The Morigaon constituency covers parts of the Morigaon district in central Assam with flat alluvial plains along the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River, interspersed with wetlands, beels (lakes), and gentle undulations in the south towards the Meghalaya plateau foothills. The terrain supports paddy farming, fishing in wetlands, and some horticulture, but is prone to seasonal flooding from the Brahmaputra and its tributaries like the Kolong and Kapili rivers. Livelihoods in Morigaon depend mainly on paddy cultivation, fishing, small trade, agriculture-related activities, and tourism-linked services around Mayong and Pobitora. Fertile alluvial soils and abundant rainfall sustain these activities. Infrastructure includes road connectivity via national highways, rail access at Jagiroad or Morigaon stations (about 10-20 km away depending on the village), and basic amenities with ongoing developments in rural roads, irrigation, and eco-tourism facilities.

The nearby towns include Nagaon to the east, about 35-40 km away, and Jagiroad to the west, roughly 20-25 km away. The state capital, Dispur/Guwahati, lies around 70-80 km west. The constituency lies close to the Meghalaya border in the south (distance 20-50 km in parts), with Meghalaya towns like Nongpoh about 60-70 km south.

Morigaon has a rich historical and cultural legacy tied to the ancient occult village of Mayong, known as the "Land of Black Magic", with folklore of sorcery, tantra, necromancy, and shape-shifting practices mentioned in epics like the Mahabharata (linked to Ghatotkacha's powers) and colonial records. It features archaeological sites, ancient manuscripts on magic, and a shift towards traditional healing today. Nearby Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary (on the Brahmaputra's southern bank) boasts the highest density of Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros in India, along with wild water buffalo, leopards, monitor lizards, deer, and over 375 bird species, making it a key eco-tourism spot. Other attractions include beels for birdwatching, local temples, and cultural festivals blending Assamese and tribal traditions.

With or without the SIR and delimitation, which have altered the voter demography, Morigaon had already moved towards becoming a BJP stronghold with two consecutive wins in the Assembly elections and leading in the last three parliamentary polls since 2014. What is alarming for its opponents is that the BJP’s margins are growing wider with each election. This puts the BJP ahead of its rivals as the Morigaon constituency prepares to vote in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. In short, it is a seat for the BJP to lose, which it can by becoming overconfident and complacent.

Trinamool pulls off a surprise victory in Assam amid Bengal rout

The Trinamool Congress has won the Mandia seat in Assam. MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed defeated his opponents from the BJP, Congress and AIUDF. Ahmed's win gives a symbolic weight for Mamata Banerjee's TMC outside West Bengal and reflects Ahmed's local clout and hold on his seat.

How Himanta demolished Congress's 3G in Assam

The Congress's three-Gogoi alliance of Ahom leaders failed to turn Upper Assam away from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Often referred to as Chanakya of the Northeast, Sarma used a pincer attack of development and consolidation to boost BJP's tally and return to power in Assam.
