Dharmapuri Assembly Election 2026
Dharmapuri Assembly Constituency

Dharmapuri, Constitiency number 59, is a district-headquarters Assembly constituency in North-West Tamil Nadu, combining administrative importance, agriculture-linked livelihoods, and semi-urban civic expectations. Politically, it is a welfare-sensitive, governance-focused seat, where outcomes hinge on scheme delivery, water security, and leadership visibility.

Unlike fully rural Pennagaram or canal-driven Palacode, Dharmapuri blends town governance with surrounding agrarian villages.

Ancient temples like Theerthamalai and the historic Adhiyamankottai Fort are located here. Primarily famous for the breathtaking Hogenakkal Falls.

Political & Social Character:

The electorate includes BC and MBC agrarian communities, SC populations, small farmers, government employees, and traders and professionals.
Key opinion shapers are farmer associations, government staff unions, cooperatives, trader bodies, and local body leaders.

Geography & Connectivity:

  • Located on the NH-44 Chennai–Bengaluru corridor
  • Strong road links to Krishnagiri, Salem, and Bengaluru
  • Dharmapuri town functions as a regional service and healthcare hub
  • Rail access limited; roads dominate
  • Challenges include traffic congestion, town–village infrastructure gaps, and pressure on district offices and hospitals

Hotspots:

  • Water-stressed villages
  • Town wards with drainage issues
  • SC habitations with housing gaps
  • Peri-urban layouts lacking services

These areas often drive anti-incumbency sentiment.

Core Issues

  • Drinking water scarcity
  • Irrigation and tank upkeep
  • Urban traffic and drainage
  • Government hospital capacity
  • Rural road connectivity
  • Housing and welfare saturation
  • Water and healthcare dominate electoral debates.

Voter Mood:

  • Farmers: water security, input support
  • Govt employees: administrative stability
  • Women: water, healthcare, pensions
  • Youth: jobs and skills
  • Elderly: pensions and medical access

Dharmapuri voters favour steady, visible, welfare-credible leadership.

While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
