Gobichettipalayam Assembly Election 2026
Gobichettipalayam Assembly Constituency

Gobichettipalayam (Gobi), Constituency no 106, is a highly politicised Kongu heartland seat where elections are decided by Kongu caste consolidation, farmer sentiment, and trader confidence. Welfare has impact, but agriculture, water security, and local leadership credibility dominate outcomes.

Margins are moderate but stable unless disrupted by water stress or farmer agitations.

Interestingly, former AIADMK strongman and ex Minister KA Sengottaiyan, who switched to Vijay-led TVK recently, has been winning here since 2006 elections.

Political & Social Character:

Dominant voter blocs:

  • Kongu Vellalar Gounders – decisive and cohesive
  • Farmers (sugarcane, turmeric, paddy, banana)
  • Town traders & commission agents
  • SC communities (rural hamlets and town pockets)
  • Small business owners & private employees
  • Kongu unity + farmer confidence = winning formula

Geography & Connectivity:

  • Gobichettipalayam town as commercial nucleus
  • Dense agrarian villages surrounding the town
  • Bhavani river irrigation-dependent belts
  • Strong road connectivity to Sathyamangalam, Erode, Tiruppur
  • Water availability defines political mood

Hotspots:

  • Canal-irrigated farmer villages
  • Sugar mill and cooperative-linked belts
  • Kongu-dominated residential wards
  • SC habitations
  • Town swing wards (traders & service class)
  • Each cluster reacts sharply to water release, crop price, and procurement issues.

Core Issues:

  • Timely Bhavani river water release
  • Sugarcane procurement price & mill payments
  • Turmeric price stability
  • Road quality connecting farm belts
  • Government hospital & education facilities
  • Youth employment migration

Voter Mood:

  • MLA must be farmer-accessible
  • Direct intervention in PWD, Revenue, Agriculture Dept

  • Respect for caste associations & cooperatives
  • Crisis-time presence during droughts or floods
  • Water mismanagement = immediate political backlash

Tamil Nadu CM Floor Test Highlights: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay comfortably won the floor test on Wednesday, securing support from 144 MLAs after the DMK staged a walkout, bringing down the effective majority mark to 88 from 117. While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
