Cumbum Assembly Election 2026
Cumbum Assembly Constituency

Cumbum (Constituency no 201), located in the western stretch of Theni district along the Tamil Nadu–Kerala border, is a constituency defined by agriculture, trade, and cross-border cultural exchange. Nestled at the foothills of the Western Ghats, Cumbum forms part of the fertile Cumbum Valley, known for rich soil, favourable climate, and diversified cropping. Traditionally identified with grape cultivation, paddy, coconut, and vegetable farming, the region also serves as a commercial gateway linking interior Theni with Kerala markets.

Unlike purely agrarian seats, Cumbum blends farming livelihoods with trading activity, small industries, and service-sector employment. While town areas display semi-urban features, large parts remain rural, making development delivery and irrigation management central to local politics.

Key Localities

The constituency includes Cumbum town, Uthamapalayam surroundings, rural panchayats across the valley, and border-facing trade clusters. Town areas focus on market infrastructure, sanitation, and traffic flow, while village pockets prioritise irrigation reliability, road quality, and access to healthcare and education.

Tamil Nadu CM Floor Test Highlights: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay comfortably won the floor test on Wednesday, securing support from 144 MLAs after the DMK staged a walkout, bringing down the effective majority mark to 88 from 117. While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
