Mudhukulathur Assembly Election 2026
Mudhukulathur Assembly Constituency

Mudukulathur (Constituency no 212) in Ramanathapuram district is a predominantly rural assembly constituency with a strong agrarian base and semi-urban pockets. Cultural and religious institutions play a central role in social life. The local economy depends on agriculture, livestock, small trade, and remittance income, with welfare schemes providing crucial social support.

Geography & Connectivity

The constituency includes dryland farms, tank-irrigated regions, and small towns. Agriculture relies heavily on seasonal water availability. Roads connect Mudukulathur to Ramanathapuram and Paramakudi, but many interior roads remain poor, and irregular public transport affects women, students, and the elderly.

  • Mudukulathur town & market areas
  • Agrarian and tank-fed villages
  • Religious centres
  • Panchayat unions, schools, government offices
  • Development Context
  • Agriculture dominates, supplemented by livestock and small trade. Despite improving education access, youth migration remains high due to limited local employment. Gaps persist in irrigation, healthcare, internal roads, and market connectivity.

  • Poor interior roads and weak transport
  • Limited healthcare and drinking water shortages
  • Youth unemployment, migration, and slow welfare delivery
  • Need for better civic infrastructure and religious site upkeep
  • Constituency Nature

  • Farmers seek assured water and fair pricing
  • Labourers value wage stability and welfare continuity
  • Youth demand education, skills, employment
  • Women prioritise healthcare, water, and safety
  • Elderly expect pensions and healthcare
  • Voters increasingly prioritise accessibility and problem-solving

Critical Zones

  • Tank-fed villages (irrigation)
  • Mudukulathur town (sanitation & healthcare)

While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
