Thoothukkudi Assembly Election 2026
Thoothukkudi Assembly Constituency

Thoothukudi (Constituency No. 214), located in southern Tamil Nadu along the Gulf of Mannar, is a mixed urban–rural assembly segment with strong industrial, commercial, and coastal economic activity. A major international port city, it handles sizable freight movement and supports shipping, salt pans, fishing, and small-scale industries, while surrounding regions depend on agriculture and livestock. The culturally vibrant constituency is shaped by temples, churches, and mosques. State Minister Geetha Jeevan was elected in the 2021 Assembly polls from here.

The controversial Vedanta Sterlite factory is located here. Protests to shut it down on environmental and other concerns led to police shooting that claimed 13 lives during the previous regime AIADMK. The factory remains closed amidst ongoing legal battle.

Traditionally called the “Pearl City,” it holds historic links to natural pearl fishing. The city has legendary connections to Pandiyas of yore as a major cultural and commercial port, trading with far east as well as west.

Political & Social Character

The electorate is diverse - urban residents, industrial workers, fishermen, farmers, labourers, and traders. Voting trends are influenced by caste networks, community identity, leadership presence, and tangible development. Urban voters lean toward governance and ideology, while rural voters emphasise welfare delivery and problem-solving. Accessibility, responsiveness, and performance increasingly shape preferences. The constituency is currently represented by Minister Geetha Jeevan.

Tamil Nadu CM Floor Test Highlights: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay comfortably won the floor test on Wednesday, securing support from 144 MLAs after the DMK staged a walkout, bringing down the effective majority mark to 88 from 117. While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
