Periyakulam Assembly Election 2026
Periyakulam Assembly Constituency

Periyakulam (Constituency no 199), located in the western part of Theni district at the foothills of the Western Ghats, is one of Tamil Nadu’s most agriculturally rooted and socially layered constituencies. Known for fertile lands, traditional irrigation systems, and proximity to hill produce zones, Periyakulam blends agrarian economy, small-town life, and rural settlements. Its identity is shaped by farming, plantation-linked livelihoods, and long-standing local power structures.

Though less urbanised than Theni town, Periyakulam functions as a regional service centre for surrounding villages, with markets, government offices, and educational institutions supporting the hinterland. Despite natural advantages, uneven development has made governance delivery a central political issue.

Political & Social Character

Politically, Periyakulam is defined by caste dynamics, family-based influence, and entrenched party loyalties. Electoral outcomes depend less on waves and more on local leadership, booth-level mobilisation, and caste arithmetic. Farmers, agricultural labourers, small traders, and welfare beneficiaries form the core voter base.

Voters closely track welfare delivery, agricultural support, and infrastructure work. While continuity is valued, dissatisfaction rises quickly when visible progress slows, making the constituency highly competitive.

Tamil Nadu CM Floor Test Highlights: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay comfortably won the floor test on Wednesday, securing support from 144 MLAs after the DMK staged a walkout, bringing down the effective majority mark to 88 from 117. While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
