Ottapidaram Assembly Election 2026
Ottapidaram Assembly Constituency

Ottapidaram (Constituency No. 217), located in the southern part of Thoothukudi district, is a predominantly rural assembly constituency with an agrarian economy supported by livestock rearing and small-scale trade. Tank-fed and dryland farming sustain livelihoods, while migrant workers’ remittances supplement household incomes. The region is culturally rooted, with temples, mosques, and local festivals shaping social cohesion.
A swing constituency in the past, it has seen victories by Congress and Communist parties. Puthiya Thamizhagam leader Dr. Krishnaswamy was elected twice from here. In recent years, Dravidian parties have come to dominate the political landscape.

Geography & Connectivity

Ottapidaram comprises dryland and tank-irrigated villages where paddy, millets, pulses, and livestock dominate livelihoods. Seasonal rainfall and effective tank maintenance are vital for stability. Road links connect the constituency with Thoothukudi, Vilathikulam, and Srivaikuntam, though many interior roads remain weak. Public transport is irregular, affecting women, students, and elderly residents in remote areas.

While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
