Gudiyattam Assembly Election 2026
Gudiyattam Assembly Constituency

Gudiyattam is a densely populated urban–semi-urban Assembly constituency in Vellore district, Constituency No. 46,  historically known as one of Tamil Nadu’s major leather-processing and tannery hubs. Its political character is shaped by a strong working-class base, significant Dalit and Muslim populations, and entrenched labour networks, with voting behaviour closely linked to employment security, pollution control, housing, and basic civic services.

It remains a closely contested seat, where community consolidation and welfare delivery are decisive.
Gudiyattam is also culturally and historically notable—famous for its ancient temples, handloom weaving (including the weaving of the national flag), and a thriving safety match industry, earning it the nickname “Little Sivakasi.” Old inscriptions, folk arts, and local festivals add to its identity.

Political & Social Character:

The electorate comprises:

  • Leather tannery and allied industry workers
  • Muslim communities engaged in trade and processing
  • Scheduled Caste populations in labour colonies
  • Small traders, transport workers, and service employees
  • Migrant and informal-sector labour

Trade unions, community leaders, and mosque- and ward-level networks strongly influence voter mobilisation.

Geography & Connectivity:

Located along the Vellore–Katpadi–Chittoor corridor, Gudiyattam has good road connectivity and proximity to industrial clusters. However, high residential density places severe strain on internal roads, drainage, and sanitation systems.

Hotspots:

  • Tannery and industrial belts
  • Worker housing colonies
  • Market areas
  • Drainage-stressed residential streets
  • Core Issues
  • Industrial pollution and health impact
  • Job security in leather and allied sectors
  • Drinking water quality and contamination
  • Poor drainage and flooding
  • Overcrowded housing and sanitation gaps
  • Limited government healthcare facilities

Voter Mood:

  • Industrial workers want job continuity and safer conditions
  • Muslim traders and families seek business stability and civic order
  • Dalit communities prioritise welfare access, housing, and dignity
  • Women voters focus on water, sanitation, and healthcare
  • Youth demand skill training and alternative employment

Gudiyattam voters consistently reward leaders who balance livelihood protection with public health and effective service delivery.

Tamil Nadu CM Floor Test Highlights: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay comfortably won the floor test on Wednesday, securing support from 144 MLAs after the DMK staged a walkout, bringing down the effective majority mark to 88 from 117. While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
