Vanur Assembly Election 2026
Vanur Assembly Constituency

Vanur, Constituency no 73, is a quiet but politically sensitive seat lying between rural Villupuram and the Puducherry – Auroville economic influence zone. Voting behaviour here is shaped by land ownership anxiety, welfare delivery, caste arithmetic, and daily survival economics, not ideology.
This is a low-decibel constituency where micro-anger swings booths fast.

It is famous for the Panchamukha Sri Jayamaruthi Anjaneya Temple (Panchavatee), the ancient Tiruvakkarai National Fossil Wood Park.

Political & Social Character:

The electorate broadly consists of:

  • Vanniyar (MBC) – numerically strong in inland villages
  • Scheduled Castes – significant presence across panchayats
  • Coastal fishing communities (OBC)
  • Agricultural labour & marginal farmers
  • Tourism-linked workers (Auroville / Pondy spillover)
  • Women SHGs & welfare beneficiaries

Geography & Connectivity:

  • Mix of coastal villages, inland agrarian belts, and peri-urban zones
  • Sandy coastal soil, dry inland patches
  • Good roads near Puducherry side; poor interior connectivity
  • Saltwater intrusion in coastal borewells
  • Cyclone & flood vulnerability in select pockets
  • Water, land, and coastal protection define politics here.

Hotspots:

  • Panchamukha Sri Jayamaruthi Anjaneya Temple (Panchavatee)
  • The ancient Tiruvakkarai National Fossil Wood Park
  • Inland agrarian panchayats
  • SC-dominated habitations
  • Auroville-adjacent villages
  • Tourism & resort-linked settlements
  • Remote interior hamlets
  • Each cluster votes on different survival concerns, not one narrative.

Core Issues:

  • Drinking water scarcity (saltwater intrusion)
  • Housing patta & land disputes
  • Coastal erosion & cyclone damage
  • Irregular fishing income & fuel costs
  • Poor interior roads
  • Limited healthcare access
  • Welfare delays (pensions, ration, housing)

Voter Mood:

  • MLA must visit villages frequently
  • Immediate help during cyclones/floods
  • Support in patta, land, and revenue issues
  • Regular welfare grievance camps
  • Respectful engagement with caste & fishing leaders

Tamil Nadu CM Floor Test Highlights: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay comfortably won the floor test on Wednesday, securing support from 144 MLAs after the DMK staged a walkout, bringing down the effective majority mark to 88 from 117. While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
