Tirukkoyilur Assembly Election 2026
Tirukkoyilur Assembly Constituency

Tirukkoyilur, Constituency no 76, is a spiritually significant yet economically fragile seat anchored by the Sri Trivikrama Perumal Temple and the Thenpennai (South Pennar) river basin. Voting behaviour is shaped by water availability, flood–drought cycles, daily livelihoods, and welfare delivery, not ideology.

This is a respect-driven seat — voters expect dignity, access, and visible local problem-solving.

The constituency is represented by DMK's K Ponmudy, who lost his Cabinet minister post for obscene remarks on Hindus.

Political & Social Character:

The electorate broadly consists of:

  • Vanniyar (MBC) – numerically strong across rural panchayats
  • Scheduled Castes – sizable presence in town wards & villages
  • Small & marginal farmers (river-dependent)
  • Agricultural labourers
  • Temple-linked traders, vendors & service workers
  • Women SHGs & welfare beneficiaries

Geography & Connectivity:

  • Mix of temple town + river-side villages
  • Seasonal river flow (flood in monsoon, dry rest of year)
  • Interior villages with weak road connectivity
  • Flood-prone low-lying belts near river
  • Water stress away from river stretch
  • River management defines both hope and anger.

Hotspots

  • Tirukkoyilur town & temple surroundings
  • Pulicat Lake
  • Thenpennai river-belt villages
  • Interior dryland agrarian panchayats
  • SC-dominated habitations
  • Weekly market villages
  • Each cluster votes on different water and livelihood realities.

Core Issues:

  • Drinking water security (post-monsoon)
  • Flood protection & embankment strength
  • Irrigation regulation & river desilting
  • Interior road quality
  • PHC accessibility
  • Welfare delays (pensions, housing, MGNREGA)
  • Temple-area sanitation & facilities

Voter Mood:

  • MLA must be visible during floods and temple festivals
  • Quick response to water & irrigation disputes
  • Regular grievance camps
  • Respectful engagement with temple & caste networks

Tamil Nadu CM Floor Test Highlights: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay comfortably won the floor test on Wednesday, securing support from 144 MLAs after the DMK staged a walkout, bringing down the effective majority mark to 88 from 117. While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
