Katpadi Assembly Election 2026
Katpadi Assembly Constituency

Katpadi is a strategically important urban–semi-urban constituency in Vellore district, Assembly Constituency No. 40,  serving as the education, transport and healthcare gateway to western Tamil Nadu. A major rail hub anchored by Katpadi Junction, it also houses VIT University, the renowned Christian Medical College (CMC), and lies close to the Vellore Golden Temple, making it a high-footfall zone year-round.

Politically, Katpadi is performance-sensitive and swing-prone, though it has been continuously represented since 1996 by senior DMK leader and Tamil Nadu Minister Durai Murugan, giving the seat strong incumbency visibility.

Political & Social Character:

The electorate includes:

  • Students and academic staff (VIT and colleges)
  • Railway and transport-linked workers
  • Government employees and professionals
  • Working-class and Dalit neighbourhoods
  • Peri-urban agrarian communities

Caste dynamics exist but are softened by urbanisation, education exposure and student influence. Youth and women voters play a key role.

Geography & Connectivity:

Katpadi is a critical rail and road junction, linking Chennai–Bengaluru–Coimbatore corridors and connecting Vellore, Ranipet, Arcot and Chittoor. However, traffic congestion, parking shortages and last-mile connectivity gaps persist, especially near the station, Vellore Institute of Technology ( VIT) and Christian Medical College (CMC).

Hotspots:

  • Railway station and bus stand area
  • VIT access roads
  • Rental housing clusters
  • Peri-urban village roads

Core Issues:

  • Traffic congestion near the station.
  • Inadequate drainage and flooding
  • Solid waste management in student zones
  • Seasonal drinking water shortages
  • Rental housing safety and regulation
  • Overburdened public transport and healthcare
  • Pedestrian safety and street lighting

Voter Mood:

  • Students & youth seek safety, transport and jobs
  • Middle class demands clean roads, drainage and water
  • Working class prioritises welfare and housing stability
  • Women voters focus on safety, lighting and sanitation
  • Peri-urban voters want basic infrastructure
  • Katpadi voters reward visible, hands-on governance and respond quickly to lapses.

Tamil Nadu Floor Test Highlights: Vijay sails through Tamil Nadu trust vote; 5 MLAs abstain

Tamil Nadu CM Floor Test Highlights: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay comfortably won the floor test on Wednesday, securing support from 144 MLAs after the DMK staged a walkout, bringing down the effective majority mark to 88 from 117. While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
