Additionally, it is one of the segments of the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency for the national parliamentary elections. Eranad, which was created in its current configuration in accordance with the 2008 delimitation, is home to a population that is primarily rural and semi-urban in nature.

Local Governance and Geography

The Eranad constituency encompasses the Eranad taluk and a portion of the Nilambur taluk in the Malappuram district. It includes Chaliyar Panchayat in Nilambur Taluk and Areacode, Edavanna, Kavannoor, Kizhuparamba, Urangattiri and Kuzhimanna, Panchayats in Ernad Taluk. The production of paddy, coconuts, and rubber is a major part of the local economy. Remittances from migrant workers overseas also play a big role in Malappuram's economy, both monetarily and socially.

Voter Participation and the Electorate

Eranad had 179951 registered voters in the 2021 Kerala Assembly election, according to the official statistical report from the Election Commission of India. With more than 142,000 valid ballots cast, the constituency registered a voter turnout of almost 79.7%. This high level of participation is consistent with Kerala's history of electoral engagement.

Party Representation and Political History

Leaders of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a crucial part of the United Democratic Front (UDF) alliance in Kerala, have represented Eranad from its founding in the post-delimitation era. The demographic realities of Malappuram district, where a sizable majority of the population is Muslim, as well as the party's organisational depth and grassroots networks, are reflected in the IUML's consistent electoral strength in the constituency. P. K. Basheer of the IUML, who has represented Eranad in the Legislative Assembly (MLA) since 2011.

Results of the 2021 Kerala Assembly Election

Eranad gave Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) candidate P. K. Basheer a resounding victory in the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election. Basheer received 78,076 votes, or around 54.49 percent of all valid votes cast, according to official figures. K. T. Abdurahiman, his closest opponent and an independent candidate supported by the Left Democratic Front (LDF), garnered 55,530 votes, or around 38.76% of the total. A few independents and representatives of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) were among the other contenders, but their total vote shares were somewhat small. The IUML's strength in the constituency was demonstrated by Basheer's victory margin of 22,546 votes, or around 15.79 percent of all votes.

Voter Behaviour and Electoral Dynamics

Parties like IUML and larger UDF alliances that are seen as attentive to community problems have historically benefited from the constituency's demographic makeup, with a sizable portion identifying as Muslim. However, independent candidates backed by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) have periodically presented formidable obstacles.  Though they have taken part in elections, parties like the BJP and smaller regional groups have not yet garnered much traction in comparison to the leading fronts.

Socioeconomic Profile

Eranad's socioeconomic situation is representative of larger trends in northern Kerala, where household earnings are supported by a combination of small-scale trading, agriculture, and remittances from jobs abroad.
