Pattambi Assembly Election 2026
Pattambi Assembly Constituency

Pattambi Assembly Constituency is located in the Palakkad district of Kerala. It is the constituency No. 50 of the 140 seats in the Kerala Legislative Assembly and is one of the seven assembly segments that comprise the Palakkad Lok Sabha constituency. Since its founding in 1957, Pattambi has seen changes in political allegiance over the years.

Administrative and Geographical Profile

The Pattambi constituency, centred on Pattambi town and the nearby panchayats, is located in the western part of Palakkad district. It includes Koppam, Kulukkallur, Muthuthala, Ongallur, Pattambi, Thiruvegapura, Vallapuzha and Vilayur Panchayats in Ottappalam Taluk. Situated on the banks of the Bharathapuzha (Nila) River, Pattambi town functions as a commercial and administrative center for the surrounding rural countryside.

Voter Participation and the Electorate

Pattambi has 194989 registered voters for the 2021 Kerala Assembly election, according to official data from the Election Commission of India. The electorate's gender distribution was balanced, with 96,571 male and 98,418 female voters, as well as a small percentage of voters who were serving overseas. With 1,51,519 valid ballots cast, the voter turnout was 78.06%, which is in line with Kerala's overall trend of high voter turnout.

Political Background and Representation

Since its founding, Pattambi has seen a range of political representation, which reflects Kerala's larger swings between Left and UDF (United Democratic Front) domination. Left front figures, such as those from the Communist Party of India (CPI/CPI(M)), frequently won seats in the early post-independence years, although the Indian National Congress (INC) later gained significant ground. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, C.P. Mohammed of the INC held the position multiple times, indicating a significant UDF presence at the time. Muhammed Muhsin of the Communist Party of India (CPI), a member of the Left Democratic Front (LDF), defeated the incumbent in 2016 marking a significant shift.

Results of the 2021 Kerala Assembly Election

Muhammad Muhsin (CPI, LDF) won a resounding mandate to keep the Pattambi Assembly seat in the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election. With 75,311 votes, Muhammad Muhsin (Communist Party of India – CPI, LDF) secured almost 49.58% of the legitimate votes cast, followed by Riyas Mukkoli of the Indian National Congress (INC, UDF) with 57,337 votes.  K. M. Haridas (BJP, NDA) received 14,578 votes. Muhsin won by a margin of 17,974 votes, or around 11.84% of all votes cast, highlighting his dominant position in the face of fierce competition.

Socioeconomic Features

The town's religious makeup was primarily Muslim along with Hindus and a small representation of other religions. Pattambi and the panchayats around it have an economy that combines small business, trade, services, and agriculture. Rice, coconuts, and fruit cultivation are widespread in Palakkad district, which is referred to as Kerala's "granary" due to its significant paddy production. For many people living in the constituency's rural areas, agriculture and related pursuits continue to be a major source of income.

Voter Behaviour and Electoral Trends

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) are engaged in fierce battle in Pattambi's electoral patterns, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP, NDA) emerging as a smaller but significant player in recent cycles. The CPI's victories in 2016 and 2021 highlight the left's organizational depth and voter support in the region, whereas past decades witnessed more alternating dominance between CPI/CPI(M) and INC.
